Why don't my drop shadows and bevels work?

Is there a reason why my drop shadows and bevels don't work in PSE5? I have been dabbling with a layout (very beginner) and find I have to save it and open again in PSE4 to apply a drop shadow to the text layer. Also when I tried to do a selection using the lasso tool it keeps telling me no pixels have been selected, yet when I tried the same thing in PSE4 in worked fine. (In both cases I duplicated the layer first) Have I got a dud PSE5? Thanks in anticipation,

Toni,
You should have no trouble using drop shadows and bevels in 5. When you click on your text layer make sure that the layer you want is the one selected. Sounds to me as if you may have Auto Select Layer ticked this causes all kinds of problems.

I dont' have access to my program right now Kev, so could you humour me and tell me where 'auto select' is? On the toolbar? I'm too new to remember all these details:)

No problem, have posted screenshot. If you can't see it just click on your move tool. If you have it checked and click on any layer accidently it will select that layer and that may not the layer you want.

Oops, I forgot to mention that it did solve my problem. Such a simple thing.....yet it was such a headache for me.

Wow! I was having minor issues with clicking on one layer and before I could practically blink another being selected. I thought I was going crazy. Went and looked and sure enough it was checked on mine. Thank you for my sanity Kev, and thanks for bringing it up Toni.
