:o Soory to come on in my very first post and asking for help.

Just purchased elements 5 downloaded files from my finepix s5100 using windows vista home premiem, No problem at all. But tried the same with my canon s40 camera and i get the error message

" Failed to obtain thumbnails from the device. The device is not connected or is busy"

The same camera works fine on my old computer when it was working. The camera goes through the processs and the orange light remains on.

Thank you millions if anyone could suggest a reason or solution to the problem. I would use a card reader but dont have one yet. The finePix uses xd card the canon compact flash. All the pictures works ok on old computer?

I have just charged the batter up but still same problem. Changed the compact flash cards same problem.

Michael, I wish I could help -- but being on a Mac, I just don't have an answer for you. However, I did want to take this opportunity to welcome you to the PET Forum, and assure you that someone will be along with some help soon, I'm sure. Don't be bashful about asking questions here. We've all had to do that, and everyone here is really helpful. Good luck in getting an answer!

I saw the info below in the Adobe user to user forum, maybe it's the same kind of issue for you?

Barb O participated in the discussion above and hangs out here sometimes, so maybe she'll weigh in.

Hey thanks kayser, i shall have a look at the photo mags to see what card reader i should get. If there is a well known great card reader that you all use let me know. Thank you so much to all of you. Now where's those mags:D

Michael,

Welcome to the forum. I think most of us asked at least one question in our first post and most of the next one for a while.

Welcome to the forum, Michael. Hope you get your problem solved. All I do to download photos from my Canon Rebel is connect it with the USB cable, then go to My Computer and the camera is listed there as an external drive. I then click on the drive, click on the folder holding the photos and drag them to a folder on my desktop. I don't have Vista, though, just WinXP.

Hi Michael,

I am actually very hesitant to say much about Vista since I don't have a machine running Vista. In the case of the referenced thread over at the Adobe fourm I posted specifically because we have a G5 which is very similar to the G3 owned by the thread originator of that thread.

For a camera card reader, I currently have a Sandisk reader but I don't know the specific model.

You could ask Canon tech support about your camera and Vista in order to know if it should be possbile or not to connect your camera to Vista. The error you got is so general that it could have other causes, so if you ask Canon then at least then you would know if your camera should work with Vista.

Michael,

There are several on the market, I use a Stratitec, it has 4 slots for various sizes of cards, a class (digital camera) I took last fall, highly recommended that one should Never use the direct method of downloading, that is Camera to PC files, something that if battery in camera should run down while in process of downloading , the files could be corrupt and possible loss of them...
