I've just upgraded from Elements 3 to 5. Question: Is there any reason to have both, or can I remove 3 ?

Thanks, Wally

You can have both, or uninstall 3, just can't run both at the same time.

Wally,
There are some features that are different in PSE3. The Web Gallery routine is one example. Some effects may also not be present in PSE5. In another thread, which has since disappeared, somebody had just pointed out the fact that 'Clear Emboss' was unavailable in 5. If by chance you are using add-on tools, like Curves in Grant's Tools, they will not run in version 5.
I would keep the older version installed. It may come in handy some day.

There's also a potential issue with losing Adobe Gamma if you uninstall Elements 3 after you install Elements 5. That's the routine used to calibrate your monitor so the colors will show correctly on your monitor.

Thanks for the quick replys, I have plenty of room so I'll just keep both.

Hi Wally ...

... and welcome to the forum :)

As long as you have the space then I think that is the best thing to do ..

Juergen,
I use PSE 5 with Grants tools and can assure you that Curves does work.
You have to make sure you download the right version.

I believe Grant's Curves won't run in PSE 4; they do indeed function quite nicely in PSE 5.

I just uninstalled PSE3 the other day. I had 3, 5 and CS2. I really do not even use 5 anymore. Now I am worried. Is there anything I should check? Things seem to be OK but I have not been doing much editing since I uninstalled 3. Thanks anyone.

Shari, the only thing I remember from past discussions is that Adobe Gamma sometimes disappears. That's easy to check in the Control Panel: if the icon is still there, all should be well. You might even start it just to make sure...

Hi Shari,
You should be fine with just CS2. Maybe keep pse 5 if you use the organizer or the effects.

It's funny....I have PSE 5, CS2, and Lightroom all on this computer. Guess which one gets 95+% of the work?? (Hint: what's the name of this website?) Guess I'm set in my ways, sentimental, and just plain slow...

Kev, Chuck,
Oops, the tools I downloaded do not even contain Curves. They are listed under Tools for Elements 5, Abbreviated Tools in a zip file called Alignment Tools here: http://www.cavesofice.org/~grant/Challenge/Tools/Files.html
I must be missing something. Should I install the set for PSE4 in PSE5?

I have been happily using SmartCurve ever since I went from PSE3 to PSE5.

Thanks Chuck - it's still there. And Ellen - I have kept PSE5 because I do use the organizer. I plan to change to Bridge at some point but have not been feeling well enough to deal with a problem if something goes wrong. I also may use the effects in 5 at some point. I guess I am OK with the two. Thanks.

Hi Wally and welcome!

I agree with Wendy, if you have the room you might keep them both installed. You can always make the decision to uninstall PSE3 at any time.

Hi Jeurgen ...

Grant hasn't update the ones on his site yet ... but Tony posted a link to the updates ones. Here it is:

Thank you, Wendy. I completely missed out on that one. I know, there was some discussion about the tools at one time, but I did not realize that Curves was included in one set and not the other. :o

Hi Jeurgen ...

I think the comfusion came about with PSE4 which blocked a lot of the "backdoor access" ... however when PSE5 was release suddenly some of these things started to work again.

I know Tony was assisting Grant with but for some reason Grant still seems to have the older version on his site ... I think I will send him an email :)
