I have a Canon Digital Rebel XT with the image quality set to Large(Fine), 3456x2304, and a Canon PowerShot A710 IS set to Large & Superfine, 3072x2304. When I bring a photo into PSE5, It opens up and displays the photo at a huge size, 48 in. x 32 in., but at 72ppi for the Digital Rebel and something similar for the PowerShot. Is that normal? Does it have to be displayed at 72 ppi or is there some setting I can change to display it at a higher resolution upon opening?

Betsy,

Welcome to the forum!:)

I remembered and found this thread (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23505&highlight=resolution) that discussed the response to your question. I have a digital Rebel, too, and my photos are the same size but I've never paid any attention to the dpi and haven't had any problems.
I typically only look at the dpi when creating a new image (like for a collage or something).

Hope that helps! Someone who knows more about it will be along soon--you've come to the right place to ask questions!:)

I don't always resize before printing -- but I leave the file intact and have gotten some excellent prints even at 8x10. The 72 dpi is considered screen resolution; which is fine for viewing photos. There is a method of resizing that increases the dpi while making the size smaller and doesn't damage the original file.
