How do I darken the edges of an image? I went to the help menu and it didn't help. I want like a vignette effect but with a softer look..Do I make sense? I am using PSE 5.
Thanks

Wendy I hope you are better. I hate being sick. Take care of yourself..
I had to go to Arkansas for about a week. My mom has been very ill for a couple of years and she passed away a couple of days after I got there. Then after I came home, about a week later, someone broke into my house while we were at work. He went thru every piece of my photography equipment, disconnected my laptop and had it ready to go, went thru every cabinet and closet in the house, checked out the stuff in the garage, went thru what little bit of jewelry I have and only took my girls medications. He did leave me his flashlight at my computer desk.. He was in custody before I got home. He hit 7 houses in the neighborhood. Mine was nothing compared to the others. He took mostly drugs, jewelry, ipods and digital cameras. THe police said they didn't understand why he didn't take my digital camera and laptop. they would have fit in his back pack. They really were amazed he would break in my house since it is on one of the busiest intersections in town. I feel pretty blessed that is all he took here. That's where I've been for the last month.
Thanks for your help.

Donna
a nice and easy way to get a vignette effect in 5 is...
go to filters, Correct Camera Distortion, turn off the grid.
Play with your amount and midpoint sliders under vignette. :)
Edit: Oh Donna, that is horrible. Glad you are OK.

I found out I didn't have enough insurance coverage to replace everything if it had been taken. I look at the positive of this (if there is one). I know now I need to get a "personal articles" policy to cover the computers, cameras, etc. The guy was hunting vicodin and things like that.. He came to the wrong place...But all is good.. Can't complain

How do I darken the edges of an image?...I want like a vignette effect but with a softer look.....Donna,
One way that I do this:
Create a new, blank layer above the image. On this layer, draw a marquee around the edge with one of the selection tools... Rectangular or Elliptical marquee, Lasso, etc. -- you can try it different ways to see which you like best on each image, since this is all isolated on a separate layer. Just pick one to start with.
Once you have a marquee around your image, invert the selection. I use CTLR-SHIFT-I to do this. Then fill with black. This leaves you with an ugly black "frame" around your image.
Then use the Gaussian Blur filter on the layer. Also, after getting close with the blur, you can adjust the opacity of the layer.
Another neat effect is to use a color other than black.
I think this gives a lot of control in creating this sort of vignette effect.

Kimi,
That worked well.
Byron,
I will try that. It sounds like a good technique and I would like to experiment with other colors.
Thank you for all the hellp.

Kimi,

Donna
Glad you liked it. I use it all of the time. :)
It is nice because you get the control while looking at the image.
