I've edited a file in Lightroom (.psd) and sent it to PSE 5 and then tried to save it as a .jpg but the drop down box does not give me .jpg as an option. There are several options presented including jpg2000 but no .jpg. Any thoughts? I don't know if I can save the file as a .jpg directly in Lightroom. Actually I probably can but don't know how to do it.

Pat,
Your file is probably in 16 bit mode. Change it to 8 bits and it will save as JPEG.

Thanks, Juergen I didn't know how to change to 8 bits so I clicked on layers and was given a prompt that asked if I wanted to change from 16 bits to 8 bits. I said yes and then canceled the layers adjustment and was given the full complement of file extension when I chose "save as". This is a roundabout way of doing it. Is there a shorter way to change from 16 to 8 bits directly?

In this case the only reason I was using PSE was to save the file because I can't figure out how to save it directly in Lightroom. I'll have to check the adobe forums although they are nothing like this forum; thanks again.

In PSE go to >Image >Mode >8bits/Channel.

Pat....

You don't actually save images in Lightroom as it's basically processing the original images in the library. What you can do is to make a Jpeg or other format by using the Export function.

Alternately, as you've probably discovered, you can invoke the Elements Editor from Lightroom but this only allows for a TIFF or PSD file. You can choose these to be either 8 or 16 bit using the Edit > Preferences > External Editors settings.

If you set this option to 8 bit then you'll have no problem saving as a Jpeg in Elements.
