Photoshop 7.0 has a File Browser capability that will look at a directory and put up thumbnails and then allow the user to change each file name easily. Does PSE 5.0 have an equivalent capability? Search as I will, I cannot find this capability.

In our office we take lots of pictures related to different events. For example JonesAccident, AuctionPlane, JohnsonAuction, would be common events and associated names that we assign to directories that we put the pictures in. Inside the directory, we label the individual pictures with appropriate names. The directory structure and picture names give a good top level indication of what is contained and in turn that information gets archived with the particular matter and its associated documents.

We have one Admin who has the expensive Photoshop software for the sole purpose of renaming the pictures and putting them in the appropriate directory. We would rather buy PSE for every staff individual and let them take/maintain their own directories and files of pictures related to their particular matter.

We have no interest in using the PSE Organizer capability, per se.

Any ideas or pointers to an add-in would be appreciated.

Thank you.

JP,

Couldn't you just use Windows Explorer to rename and move files?

The "File Browser" was removed from PSE effective with v4.

The quick answer is that Photoshop shows a 'proof' sheet of pictures and when you select one, the name but not the file type is highlighted. Merely typing in the new name is all that is needed. Using this method the proof sheet allows the user to assign a meaningful name.

Very intuitive.

Too bad that capability has been eliminated.

Anybody know of a third party add-in?

JP,

Over at the Adobe Photoshop Elements forum, someone shared a link to the FastStone Image Viewer (http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm).

While I have not tried it, the description of what it does seems to be close to what you seek.

FWIW...

Juergen D had a great pointer to a similiar product ii IrfanView.

Business users get capability for $12 US

It does what we needed to do with PSE and Photoshop. We just bought 46 copies and saved about $3000.

Thanks to all who helped.
