Lyer Style Question

I've managed to collect a couple of layer styles that did not come with v.5.
And I have them installed in the right place.:D
My question is: If I continue to collect some more;)...,do they have to be put into the program, or...can they live in a folder on my desktop the way the extra fonts, brushes, gradients do?

Layer Styles do have to be within Elements ..
