View Full Version : Layers Lesson 8

In lesson 8 where it talks about selecting the layer mask and filling the layer mask with black with the paint bucket (this worked for me); then it says to click on the gradient tool (I'm okay thus far), choose the black/white gradient; choose linear gradient option (still okay to this point), then click at the bottom, hold down the shift key and drag to the top (here's where I'm having trouble). When I release the shift key and release the mouse, the layer mask is still filled with black and doesn't show the gradient as shown in the video. I have made sure that I clicked on the layer mask beforehand.

Any suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong? I have tried it several times and still can't get it to work.

I am using Elements 4.

Thanks.

See if releasing the mouse before letting up on shift key makes a difference?

Have you tried without holding the shift key? Not that it should matter as the shift just keeps your line straight.

tnwaltz,

Be sure not to miss the BONUS lessons on day 7, 14 and 21 :)

EDIT: You need to scroll down just a bit to see the Bonus lessons

I agree with GaryK, just don't use the shift key.
I don't think it's desperately important to have your line 100% straight.
I did that part without the shift key and the gradient worked fine :)

Firstly, I think this is Lesson 9 not 8, but more importantly, check that you have the Black to White gradient selected and not the Black to Transparent. I think that may be where you're going wrong.

I have tried all of the suggestions given but still cannot get it to work. I must be missing something, but just what ... I don't know. I'll watch that part of the video again to see if I can pick up on something. As I watched it before (many times), I wrote notes. Just can't figure this one out.

Thanks for telling me about the bonus. I had missed it.

I'm heading back to the video once again to see if I can figure this out.
