Well I don't have any ideas at the moment, but it is a strange looking photograph. What comes to my mind is that the men are trying to decide on who gets to change the little tyke! Or where he came from?

Deborah,

About all I can think of at the moment is using the technique from the Wedding Video tip and putting a funny caption under it.

Maybe we could have caption suggestions :)

Is everyone related in this photo? If so, you could do something with generations/relatives, like passing on the farming gene to the baby. Othere than that, I don't have a clue.

To me, it seems like the baby either "did" something loud or "said" something loud for the first time...and everybody just looked down in shock!  I still think it's a cool photo! :)

Jenn,

It looks like Deborah duplicate the background layer, did a motion blur on the duplicate and then reduced the opacity of it :)

Wendy,
I'm running into another problem. I've tried to work on a picture page from one of Tim Shelbourne's site. I'm not able to get clear pictures. And Not able to put a frame around the pictures also.
This is one attempt that I was able to do. What am I doing wrong?
My next mission is trying the calendar. May be I should work on the calendar.

Hi Deborah ...

Did you use the marquee tool on the small images ?? ... I think that you may have a feather set on it :( Just select the tool then look at the top of the screen, check the feather box and set it to zero.

Just had a thought ... that maybe why you can't get the frame to show.

Try it again on just one image and see if it works this time ... Do let us know how you go on :)

Wendy,
I've doubled checked the marquee tool box. I did have them at zero.
I noticed when I add the frame around the small box, i'm getting another layer over the photo, instead of the frame ....
any other suggestions?

Deborah

Hi Deborah ...

Try this for me:

Create a new image 800 pixels x 800 pixels RGB, white background
Now add a new layer and fill it with red
Next get hold of the rectangular marquee (the one under the eyedropper)
make sure that there is no feather set and that the mode is normal
draw a rectangle with the maequee tool and do Edit>Copy then Edit>Paste
Open up the layers palette and you shoud have three layers:
Layer 2 (small red square)
Layer 1 (all red)
Background (all white)

Now set your foreground colour to white
then hold down the Control key and Click where it says layer 2 (in the layers palette) and the marching ants should show up.
Do Edit>stroke Selection 10 pixels

Hopefully you now have the small square outlined in white ?

Wendy,
I've tried that procedure, The only problem is that I cant get the squares to rotate without moving the image.
I just cut and pasted all the images then added a background. I'm not to pleased with the results.
Back to the drawing board again. This is probably very simple and I'm making it hard. Sorry for being a pain.

OK Deb ..

My instructions were just to test that you could indeed get a clean selection and do the stroke on the same layer ... and you seem to have done. So now we need to apply that to the tutorial.

In Tim's tutorial I think he uses the template method ??

So just start again and create your template on a new layer ... rotate that that template and then use the selection it gives you to create your individual small images.

Try it out on just a couple of small images and see if you can get it to work OK this time. Don't worry about it, we will get it working OK :) just make sure that there is no feather when you use the rectangular marquee to create your template.

Thanks Deb. Listen, don't get frustrated. I have always loved art and done some kind of creative thing all my life. Some things come easier than others. I love the way the Tim Shelbourne tutorial turned out. Problem is it was "his" vision not mine. I struggle with trying to come up with my own ideas. I have always been a great copier and that's something I'm trying to change.

There are so many avenues that you can go down with your art. You just have to find the one that suits you the best. Kids are wonderful subjects. Mine are teens now though so they don't want to have their pictures taken.

It does get easier. Believe me. Have fun with it, and don't hesitate to ask for help. I do remember that in that tutorial I did skip some steps and there was some things that PSE was not capable of. (I can't remember what off the top of my head). So what I did was leave out the step or make one up that I thought would substitute. It's all trial and error.

When you are ready to do it ... start a new thread then when you are uncertain as to what to do ... I will talk you though it step by step.

His tutorials are really very complex ... so don't worry about it. You will get there :)

Wendy,
Absolutely beautiful.....exquisite.

Your right Wendy, I havent finished the photo yet, just kept it simple to make sure I had the technique right...................(Hope that she remembers what she did) I'm not a quitter. Just takes me a bit.

I do have a question (AGAIN) what is or where is the blending mode? alot of tutorials talk about. I have PE3, It asks for it in the tutorial
I'm stumped.

Thanks Wendy

Wendy
October 2nd, 2005, 09:30 AM
Deb ...

Open any flattened image ... then duplicate the layer

Now do Enhance>Adjust Colour>Hue & Saturation and increase the saturation a lot (on the duplicate layer)

Now open up the layers palette and you will see at the top there is a box that says normal ... click on it and you find the blending modes are there. Experiment with them ... and watch your image change :)

What is happening is that the blending mode changes how the top image (your increased saturation one) interacts with the other one :)

Hi Pat,
Thank you

I use a few from Adobe, Edwardian script, or Vladmer script,
The one for the family I think I used Lucida Handwriting.

When I need a new font I find several free ones from DaFont.com Hope this helps

 Thanks for the laugh Deborah. Boy do I remember those days!! I just ended up buzzing my son with the clippers and that lasted for years. Over the last year he has decided he doesn't like it that short and insists that I cut it. I took him to get it done once and he didn't like the way she did it. I'm clueless with the scissors and never want to do it, but he still wants me too. The last time I cut one patch too short and he got his dad to buzz it all off (I prefer it that way anyway). I keep hoping he'll quit asking me to do it. (he's 12.5)

Deborah, I love the way that one turned out. It looks like he's mourning the loss of his hair with those bits off to the side. So sweet. He'll have a good chuckle over that one when he's older!

When my son was about 2 one Christmas he was mad about the present he got the night before. It was a glow in the dark blanket and he wasn't impressed (that is until he discovered it glowed, then he liked it.). I have a picture of him and my two daughters standing in front of the Christmas tree and his back is turned to the camera and his arms are crossed. It's just so darn cute.

Wendy, I wasn't very amused at the time, but it's sure is funny now. I also have another one of him like that with his sisters and cousins. I believe that was a Christmas too and I lined the kids up along the wall to take their pictures. Arms crossed, back to the camera. When he was younger (I believe 2 or younger), he would wear a baseball cap pulled right down over his eyes so that you couldn't see his face. No one was allowed to touch it, and i don't know how he ever saw where he was going!
Now he doesn't turn his back as much on the camera, he just holds his hand in front of his face.
