...strap! I am uncomfortable using the neck strap that came with my Canon Rebel XTi. With my old film SLR camera I had a sort of macrame strap which kind of conformed to my neck. This new one is hard and not very flexible. Does anyone have any ideas about comfortable replacement straps?

Well, I've never been out looking for one but if you google "camera neck straps" it comes up with a million sites so I'm sure you could find a comfortable one if you choose. Good luck!

Why not find a way to affix your old strap to the new camera. I don't think anyone likes or uses the thin ones that come with the cameras. When I got my Rebel 300D I switched to my Mickey Mouse wide strap from my camcorder. If the strap doesn't match to the mounts find away to do it. I had to but some small clip hooks. For the most part camera straps are pretty universal.

If you want the best here's the place (don't have one so can't give a glowing review but I've seen a number)

Or these also come highly recommended.

I've been thinking about a new one too - not so much for comfort but for the quick release feature - I find it a bit of a pain when using a tripod not being able to take the strap off easily.

There are some good ones by Tamrac. They are foam & have stretch to them--very comfortable. I've used the same one from Tamrac for 4 years, after finding the one that came with my Rebel very uncomfortable.

I just got this one & I like it quite a bit,http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FGWPXE/104-8275921-1302338
It's comfortable & very secure. Any question you can shoot me a PM:)

Hi Julie, I too have a Rebel (xt) and hated the strap - wide, stiff, and uncomfortable.

Like Betty, I have one from Tamrac I love. It's fairly soft (a bit of foam padding around the neck area) and I love the the quick release feature also mentioned by Tony. Quick release is great for tripod stuff and/or if you have times you just wanna get rid of the dang strap! :)
Got it in our local camera store...
I think it's model N-35 here: http://www.tamrac.com/g_camerastraps.htm

I just picked up a Lowepro Transporter for my 300D and its great! It was $20 at Best Buy. I'm going to get another for my binoculars.

It seems as if there's a contest to see which manufacturer can supply:

The most uncomfortable neck strap and/or
The smallest memory cardwith their cameras. Canon is trying very hard to win this contest...

Kim, great idea! I have a nice stretchy padded strap on one of my film SLR's. Now if I can only remember where I stored those cameras...:o My initials aren't CRS for nothin'!

I'm not a fan of any type of kneck strap and prefer a wrist strap. I got mine from Ebay -

The straps made by Optech are very good and give the illusion of less weight on your neck. The straps by Tamrac are similar but not quite the quality of Optech. The Upstrap is an excellent strap if you are going to carry a camera on your shoulder as it has great slip resistance but it is murder on your neck.

I wore out several Tamrac straps over a 4-5 year period. When I sent them back to the factory for repair (I really liked them), the company repaired them for free. That's what I call service.

The Tamracs N17 has rubber threads woven into the fabric which help grip the shoulder. Since I usually carry 2 bodies, I don't want to worry about the camera slipping off at an awkward moment.

The Domke I tried kept slipping off my shoulder and was uncomfortable. People who carry their camera around their neck seem to like the Tamrac N27 but it kept falling off my shoulder as well. A friend bought the Upstrap and didn't like it so he gave it to me. I didn't like it either and gave it to another friend. At this time, I think it's passed through 3-4 hands.

On my 10D, I have a handstrap as well as a neckstrap so I can disconnect the neckstrap and use just the handstrap when necessary. The problem with many handstraps is that it limits access to the battery compartment unless you have an external batter grip which all my cameras have.

You can't go wrong with a Tamrac. Just my US$0.03 worth (adjusted for inflation).

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and comments. I'll try AngelicKim's idea of modifying the connectors on my old film camera strap so it will work with the new camera. It doesn't have the quick release (more of a moderately slow release), so I'll want to upgrade soon. You've given me some good tips and it will help me narrow down my search. You are all such a great resource!

I have a Canon Rebel and the strap really "rubbed me wrong." I went to the automotive section in Wal-Mart and got one of those padded things that you slip over the seatbelt in the car to keep it from riding your neck. Put it on my camera strap and it's nice and cushy. It does get warm in the summer, though.

Hi ...

I use the Lowepro Neoprene strap ... it really is comfortable. The Canon strap that came with mine went straight in the bin !!

Being a Canon user I never think about Nikons either.

My Nikon strap was OK, but I replaced it with a Tamrac Digital with quick release. The "digital" means there are 2 small pockets that can carry extra memory cards. I can squish a battery into one of the pockets but then the flap doesn't close. The Quick release allows the strap to be removed so it's not in the way with a tripod or flash bracket. I've been using the Tamrac for about 6 months now and really like it.
