Hi Reka,

I just signed up! But I haven't received the email with the password, so I can't get in yet.:( I decided it just wouldn't feel like Sunday AM without sitting in front of the printer with a good cup of coffee, listening to the Sunday AM acoustic music show on the radio.

Looking forward to it!

got into the pizzazz class etc using the following method.
Micki's e-mail linked works-Sara's link part did not.I had to work around last class too.

But, on Sara's e-mail:
right click the first link and copy shortcut. Then paste it into the address bar of the "blue e" (as my students call it at school, or e-blue the hispanic children) and press the green go.

for the 2nd link in her e-mail (to say welcome I'm in etc)...same as above, but...once pasted, delete the letters that don't belong. Have it end with .com

Hope this helps.

Good morning, Michelle!

I haven't received my email from Sara yet, so I don't have a password. How dare she not respond immediately when someone signs up at 6am on Sunday morning on the first day of class!:p :D When I do get it I'll follow your directions. Thanks! See you in class...

I'm all signed for Pizzazz and ready to print our this week's lesson. Glad to see there are quite a few of us on board for this trip!

Kim, hope you sign up in spite of your "home" issues! It'll take your mind of them perhaps? BTW, you would have loved dinner the other night! Had a few for you! How did yours turn out?

kimh
May 7th, 2007, 05:09 AM
Well I did not get to the computer 'til this AM and Eclectic said last day to sign up was yest. I tried anyway and they took my $$$ so I will see what happens.

Norma-glad dinner was fun. Thought of y'all. Wish I could have joined you. Mine was okay.
Should we plan a time/date for our sunset safari? Remember...weekdays and not crowded for me...should I expect everyone to adjust to my schedule?:p
kimh

nkeevers
May 7th, 2007, 07:12 AM
I can adjust to your scheduled no problem. Long as I have a date where I can have Tim clear his work schedule. Sounds like fun. Will have to practice my night picture-taking techniques.

Glad you joined the class! At least I'll have help from all of you when I get stumped!:D

msbrad
May 7th, 2007, 07:37 AM
Yea ! Kim, glad you signed up for Pizzazz. I would write back to Micki and possibly Sara and beg if needed! Need another note for admission???
I brought my lesson to read today.

I'm adjustable on the date for the sunset safari too. Are you referring to the BG safari?, or the Tarpon Beach Sunset one, or both.:D Weekdays work for me, less crowds. Were y'all able to upgrade your pass to BG and turn it into the Florida Fun card?

Wish y'all could have joined us at dinner too. It was fun. Little place great food.

Well, that was easy reading! I finished with Assignment 1. Don't love assignment 4 because I think the smoke effect looks awful! I'll have to play with that one when I get to it. And we have to experiment and make our own effect? That'll be fun!

Hi Norma,

This has been a pretty easy week. I'm suffering from an intestinal bug of some sort so had an excuse to just lay on the sofa all day with the laptop, getting the homework done. The smoke is fun when you find the right photo.
Here's mine:

http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/19q45BDw4vc4kN9WHScTkwgq7tHzr_thumb.jpg (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=19q45BDw4vc4kN9WHScTkwgq7tHzr)

I was looking at someone else's homework and noticed that she used filters that aren't under the "Artistic" tab. Did I misunderstand the instructions? I've been using just the artistic filters. How did you interpret it?

BTW, did you ever get your organizer to work properly again?

nkeevers
May 7th, 2007, 09:14 PM
Yes, I did get my organizer to work properly again thank you! I think it had something to do with Michelle's numbered pictures which I was importing and mine! For the life of me, now I can't think how I solved the problem but it's fine.

You're smoke looks great! Did you do something other than what Sara does? Because mine looks like crap!

Who's homework? I thought we were just using the artistic too! I'll have to go check now!

CalamityJanet
May 7th, 2007, 09:31 PM
Norma, I didn't think the smoke was thin enough, so I duplicated the background and did the selection, feathered it 40 px, did the clouds and then reduced the layer opacity to 70%. I think that it takes away some of the fakiness when you can see the tree limbs through the smoke.

Janet- your smoke looks great. And I love the subject you chose! I've thought of my subject, just not that cool.
I've only gotten as far as 'reading' it. Maybe tomorrow......It does seem do-able.
Kim, if you do not get your password soon-use mine, and print your pages, then you won't be behind. Glad you are in! Hope the rest of the week goes easier for you.
Norma- I agree, I thought those were the filters I read about too.

Has anyone heard from Colleen?

Suzi - good for you. If you found another filter to add something you like, go for it. I think the bottom line of these courses is to just learn the ins and outs of this program, and apply it. I certainly strayed in the other 2 courses I took, as needed.

Easy Granite - Sara says to make a new image, etc., etc., and she says to add noise at 35%, gaussian, monochromatic. Well, my monochromatic can't be clicked (it's grayed out)!

May 8th, 2007, 04:44 PM
Norma, I just looked at all your homework, and you've done a great job! The poster edges on the hydrangeas is very pretty. I never thought of using it on a close-up of flowers...I'll have to try it. Your smoke does look great! I think it just doesn't look very transparent because of the water behind it, but it looks pretty realistic. And I love the Paint Daubs painting! I tried using that filter, but didn't get such good results. I'm done, but since it's early I may go back and try some different things for the paintings. I think I need to lower the resolution of my photos because some of the effects are barely visible unless you zoom way in.

nkeevers
May 8th, 2007, 05:47 PM
Janet, thanks for the praise! I've been working non-stop for 2 days to get it done since I have things to do around the house. I thought I'd give the poster edges a try on the flowers not knowing if it would look good or not. Not bad though! You think my smoke looks good? I like the transparency of yours better but it wouldn't go transparent! Let me know when you upload yours so I can take a peek and see some great work!

By the way, I loved your "Evening Mist" picture in your gallery! How did you do that??

CalamityJanet
May 8th, 2007, 06:34 PM
Norma, "Evening Mist" was one of those shots that you almost trash, but keep thinking there must be a way to fix it, so you don't. It was taken with my P&S camera on auto and because of the low light the ISO went too high and it was really noisy. When someone posted the Orton effect instructions I tried it and it teurned out really well! The mist was really there that evening, not an added effect. Glad you like it!

Michelle, I just checked out your homework...great job! The Rainforest Cafe is a perfect image for the poster edges. And your barn painting is beautiful. I think you have a real knack for painting with filters! Your smoke is very smokey, not fakey! Are you sure it was Christmas? Looks like a summertime cookout to me. I guess that's the difference between Virginia and Florida.

Thanks Janet,

Becky, the classes are from eclectic academy
http://www.eclecticacademy.com/curriculum.htm
Several from here have taken (and are) from there. I've learned a lot
and had fun too especially with our random threads we get going.
Do consider joining us.

Norma, regarding the smoke...actually plenty of it around today!!!! I didn't use the default black/white with the clouds. I selected a gray/white. then kept re-doing the filter until, I liked where the whiter parts were. Then ctrl +j the level and messed with opacity.
Kim, post your homework. How is the smoke by you?
The 5th grade field trip has been cancelled to BG today, and no outdoor activiites at school.

May 14th, 2007, 09:39 AM
I'm ready...in fact I already tried some of the exercises yesterday. I ran into a quesstion with the pen & ink thing. The first step involves using "equalize" which is a photoshop feature, not Elements. Does anybody know what the equivalent would be in Elements? I tried a few images without doing that step and it seems the "find edges" doesn't end up looking like it should. Maybe later I'll ask Sara....after I get my yard work done.

Okay, has anyone worked on anything yet. I'm asking because I did the sprayed strokes with the tree (boy, it was small!) and used her settings and why do I get some black outlines at the edges of the leaves?? If I make the setting smaller, then I get no detail and if I go higher, then the black is more pronounced.

Seems like we're all doing homework today!

Michelle, I may need to add a new category to your "excuse" form. "My iMac ate my homework!" I spent forever doing a painting with the sprayed strokes filter and when I saved it I couldn't find it. Now I've found it, but I'm not sure how to resave it so I can get it uploaded to Smugmug. Since it's a Mac thing I've gone to the forum for help. Thanks for the tip on the shear lesson. I must have just done it the right way by instinct because I didn't even notice the error. On the dollar bill thing I found that if you feather your selections for the creases you get a more subtle crease when you do the burn tool.

Kim, your homework looks great! I love the spin blurred daisy! And the smokey jeep is great. But the best is the ornamental cabbage...it's absolutely gorgeous! I'd be putting that one one the wall if it was mine.

Norma, I didn't try anything on the tree. I just started experimenting with my own photos. Maybe we're all going to finish early this week?

I'm kind of stuck, too, Michelle. I can't find any of my photos that will work with the motion blur. You'd think with 3 dogs here that I'd have at least one shot of dogs in motion. Well, I do but the dogs are always the blurry part, so that won't work.:( I didn't do a crosshatch. I just did a spatter and sprayed strokes because I thought that's all we're supposed to post from the brush strokes? I really like the pen and ink effect. I might do more than one of those. I thought I'd be done tonight but the motion blur is holding me back.

It has taken me 45 minutes!!! I set up all the links and captions for all 14 images, clicked on upload, and it hung up on the second image! Okay, I thought, we'll try again. It hung up again!!:twisted:http://bestsmileys.com/angry1/8.gif So I had to do each of the 14 separately. http://bestsmileys.com/angry1/15.gif At this point I could have done the smoke thing with it coming out of my ears without any photoshopping!

So now it is quarter past ten and I am going for a walk with the dog and then to bed.

Good night!

Good morning!

Thanks, Norma. It's Photobucket. I don't know why it won't me upload more than one image at a time like it should. It always crashes on the second image. I tried it day before yesterday too and it wouldn't work. But they are all posted now, although like I said, I had to do them all one by one. My link is on the message board.

Hi guys,
I've been away from here for a little bit. Kayak trip yesterday. Juniper Run near Ocala. That is always a fun day......once you get past the rangers as they have been known to check coolers. "NO ALCOHOL". Technically no disposable containers either. I had to strategically place my CL in the bottom of the coolers. Of course must be small coolers to fit on Kayaks. Want to get a few pics posted.
Been working on the HW this AM.
Michelle, Norma, Janet----thanks for your comments on my week one hw.
Reka-don't worry we'll get you through the hw. It's only week 2. This group were life savers for me last 2 classes as I was stressed and away w/my mom sick.
Michelle-great job on the 'blur'. Good roller coaster and canoe guy.

Gee, Norma, thanks for the praise! :o I took *all* morning to get the pen & ink done. I think I tried 20 images before finding something I liked. This was definitely a filter you con only use to satisfaction on very few images.

As far as the motion goes, I didn't like any of the results either; that's why I did the radial blur as well. AND, I made an exact selection of the girl (one of my daughter's soccer teammates) in the first step instead of the oval marquee. I really think that helped. I struggled with it for quite a while, too.

:cool:I have been holding that water image for a while, just knowing I could use it somewhere. And my husband scolds me for being a packrat!:D Good thing he can't see all the fonts and brushes and images and textures and ... in my laptop! And I still have plenty of HD room on the PC, and an EHD of 150 GB!!!

Oh, four emoticons per post is just not enough!!!!

Good idea with selecting the whole girl instead of just using an oval. It took me 3 days and I still can't get it right. And you are right about the pen and ink. It only happens good on certain pictures. I tried it on quite a few before I settled on the ones I did. And the radial blur...I never thought of that!

Hi, everybody! I've been very busy for the last few days so I haven't been here much, but I'm catching up now. My niece has been selected for a full scolarship at Perdue University to get her masters degree. She'll be moving into her own apartment for the first time so I spent a couple of days going through the house and gathering up some furniture, lamps, etc. for her to take with her. I am sad that she'll be so far away, but this is such a wonderful opportunity and we're so proud of her!

I just checked out everyone's homework over at EA and left some comments there. It seems we were all on about the same page, so to speak. It was challenging to find a way to use the motion/extrude, but there were some good results! I thought all the pen & inks were wonderful! It's a great effect when you find the right photo.

Those of us who took Collages and Composites got a good headstart on Week3 since a big part of the homework is the soap bubble. I didn't think it was necessary to do a new one, so I just posted the ones I did for C&C. Isn't it great that Sara has posted weeks 3-6 already?

Kimh, Wk3 is a piece of cake if you still have your waterlily bubble from C&C. You just have to make a few brushes and one easy image with the crystallize filter as a border. Since Sara has posted all the lessons it's a good time to get ahead of schedule this week.

I got the first border okay but when it came to the "more trickier" one? I didn't understand her instructions. Sometimes I don't think she totally explains things well. She said to select mask and then paint the "mask" over the image but not going to the edge. Well, I did that and I didn't see much happening that's for sure. Must be dummy me. hen when I made the background into a normal layer and hit the delete key, it didn't remove the selection (the mask?) so I did my own workaround.

Reka, I followed the border directions explicitly...for a while.(in the practice round with the camera pic.) The bird one with the clouds border, I had the area selected with the ants and applied, whatever 3's it says in its description. Then, I added layers to get the effect I wanted as needed.

Well I'm done and here's my take on it. Didn't much like anything except the book cover part. Oh, and putting your image behind the text. That's cool!

Borders are good. I couldn't get the splatters to go all through them like you were able to do.

Thanks Michelle! I had a heck of a time coming up with something for the book. Figured Jodie had to have her own book.

I just finished Lesson 5! At least that one was fun! I experimented.

You mean the grunge borders? I'm trying that too...but I had to ask how to do a filter fade...I don't see it working for me. Have you gotten there yet?

msbrad
May 30th, 2007, 09:09 PM
I think (of course-I don't know for sure..) the filter fade is a "real" photoshop thingy.
Thus far, mine is NOT working as per the directions. My first mess up was when I applied the glass filter-had a totally different look.
Will try again tomorrow.
I think...I can get the effect, but it will be a "my way" work around-not the directions. Shall let you know.

I just posted my Lesson 5 homework. Now that was fun doing (least I can use them!). On to the last lesson shortly. I'm trying to get them done because I actually have a job to do for someone using PE! Can you believe it? I'll even get paid (though I have no idea what I should charge:eek:).

Norma,
They look good, and you are right...something that can be used.
I probably won't get to even looking at the pdf until...maybe Sat.

I'm going to give Kimi's directions another try, before entering into the "my way" zone :p Mine was looking just like Rusty's in the 2 pic example he had when stuck, so shall see.
Later.

Just looked at your hw over at EA. Looks good.

Norma,
Just tried to look in your gallery to see the orton pic you did, and I got a message that says "no pictures" in gallery.

Loving the rain, compliments of 'Barry'.
Back to finish Kimi's week 19 hw (still not done).

I like the orton effect on your niece.
Question, where is the nature walk in your gallery? Did you go camping???

LOL! Yeah, right, like can you picture me camping!!!! Are you talking about the one of the river with the mist rising? If so, my brother actually took that in Maryland and sent it to me but it was blown out so I fixed it. Figured I'd post it since it was a nice picture.

"Fix it" mode? I hate doing that...and I should be doing it too!

Glad you liked the Orton effect...it wasn't that great of a picture so I had to fix it up first. Then I said I'd try the effect and it didn't come out half bad. Not as good as others I've seen but it looks better than the original.

Oh that one. That was taken at Selby Gardens down in Sarasota. Great botanical gardens to take pictures at. Ever been there? Check them out online.

I think that was a pen and ink but I don't remember the settings. Might have done a blend mode over it but not sure.

A question...thought I could go back and check the file. If you save as a psd, doesnt it preserve the layers and show in the history the steps? Is there a way to open that?

msbrad
June 2nd, 2007, 12:10 PM
Best my brain knows... a saved psd file keeps the layers to mess with again, but, the history is history. I think that is a whole photoshop deal.

I was looking at that one too. I really like it. It looks a little like 'Ravine Gardens' where I run after work. Want to get some pictures of some of the 'walkways'. Usually there for exercise though:rolleyes:
Did do some photos for a family in there though.

So that means when I go to edit my image again, you don't see the history at the bottom that shows the step you took...that's a bummer! And I went back in to the nature picture and it didn't have all my layers either (unless my layers were only two!)

Kim, Selby Gardens would be a great place to get together to do some shooting! If you like trees, flowers, especially orchids, etc.,

5 is basically using the next filters for sketches. I love making sketches, so it seemed easy. You learn so much about blending modes and filters when you are forced to use them.

Morning Reka,
Still here:D
Tuesday: Norma, Kimh and I took a "road trip" and met Angelickim. Visited, had lunch, and took a few photos at a park.
Angelickim started this thread (http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24322).
Yesterday and today I have cousins in from out of town. Had a big dinner here last night. Busch Gardens today with the cousins.
I have one photo to finish on a LO for a teacher friend at school.
had sewing to do for recitals and a bit of shopping.
AND I hope to get my week 5 hw done by tomorrow.

Shall get all caught up.

Hi Reka, I'm back too. First was a gradient, second was a pattern:)

Trip to see the forum pals. Wednesday was crazy as my friend and I were trying to design a t-shirt for our camping trip in a couple weeks. We are very pleased with the outcome. I'm thrilled I was able to put all of our 'layers' on a CD and turn it in with proper 'format' and size. Felt quite smart:p Doesn't take much does it! Yest. worked an extra 12 1/2 hrs. which made me very cranky (until it was over...now I'm thrilled to have extra $$ to spend.)
Needless to say today must get at week 5 homework.
Must thank Michelle for the pirate on the front of the "T". The back of the shirt is the map.

Kimh, great job on the tee! I love the design and glad Michelle was able to give you the exact pirate needed to finish your shirts! Can't wait to see the back too! Now, I expect a picture of all of you with your tees on during your outing. Now, stop being cranky because you did all that, you got MONEY, and you have the "Lifetime" channel right?:D:D

I'm still busy working on my friend's project and haven't finished one part of Lesson 6 yet! I'm getting tired of it a bit because I have other things I want to do so I'll be glad when it's done. Probably work on it this weekend (in between my housework that is!) Looking forward to the USF butterfly exhibit Sunday. I think I'll have to practice with my camera taking closeups so I don't botch too many up.

You have a great weekend! Well, as much as you can working that is!:D

Kim,
Great t-shirt! Y'all did a super job. Glad the pirate worked.
Need to get back to my week 5 stuff.

I was so tired from yesterday, I ended up sleeping in until 8:25 this morning!
I never to that!!!

Reka, would love a road trip your direction for sure. Not certain Sally could handle it, if I drove:p
But when/if I get back to Italy, will certainly try to find a way.

Bill is still awaiting his passport renewal so we can go somewhere this summer to vacation and celebrate our 25th.
