Hi, I am new to this Forum and wondering if I am in the right place first of all, just started using Adobe Photoshop Element 4.0 and found out that the Adobe forum is misleading as far as getting information and so on.

Have two separate operating system one a XP the other Vista. Element 4 is not fully cooperating with me on the Vista and bought it specifically for it, since the hardware on it as far as Ram and so forth is greater thus more crunch on the software..

What would be your suggestions to use the XP or the Vista for element 4 or is it worth it to upgrade to Element 5 if it’s feasible with Vista, just realized the Great potential of Adobe Photoshop.

Is their upgrade for Element 4, by the way...?

Thanks for your patience.

Welcome to the forum. You will find that people on here use just about all the versions of PSE out there, so getting help for PSE4 will be no problem at all. And a lot of the tutorials were originally written with PSE4 in mind, but will still work on PSE 5, and vice versa.

As for PSE4 and Vista, Adobe has not provided an update to make PSE4 Vista compatible. However, MS has a compatibility update available to help older programs run on Vista. You can download that here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932246/en-us).

I upgraded from PSE3 to PSE5, and Adobe does have an upgrade price (currently $79 on their website) if you want to go that route. Those that upgraded to PSE5 from PSE4 seem to think it is definitely worthwhile. I am sure you will get some feedback from them.

In the mean time, give that MS update a shot to see if it will help.

Thanks for the quick reply, will try the MS update. Seen on the internet PS5 for $35 Oem version, is it a scam or what is it??

As with anything on the Web.....be very very careful about where you get your stuff from. I just did a quick check of the sites I normally buy from and none of them even offer an OEM version of PSE.

Thanks again, just completed the download that you recommended, God bless.

Will check in to the OEM Version:eek:

Let me know if that works. I'm still floating along in XP land for the time being.

Zapper,
I use Elements 5 with Vista, no trouble with it at all.
You need to download the patch from -

http://www.adobe.com/downloads/

Install the patch (quite large) and you should be OK.

Thanks but would it work on 4? One way to find out, will download and see.:D

May I say this Forum sure beats the Adobe Forum, everyway and anyway.

From reading other threads on these forums, I think that patch is only good on PSE5 and that Adobe is not going to patch PSE4 to work on Vista. MS issues their patch so that older software could run on Vista, not to help out the software vendors such as Adobe.

Welcome to the forums.:)

The Adobe patch is for 5 only.

re the upgrade 4-5. You get the standalone version 5. So it is more of a price break than an upgrade.
Many around here have gotten good prices by waiting for sales or from some of the big online vendors.

Let us know if the Microsoft patch helps with Vista and 4. It is a new patch and you might be the local ginnea pig.:D

That patch that you recommended, it states that " It doesn't apply to my system" Have 32 bit Vista, go figure:

I just had a quick peek, it seems as there is a 32 bit or a 64 bit version to download.
I don't have Vista yet, so I have no idea what this is all about, or, if it will in fact, fix the problem with PE4.

Anybody else tried this yet????

Found a site that sells the PSE 5 for $35, as a OEM disk, that's kind of low did not try to check out to see what they charge for shipping , that's probably where they get you.

Since already have PSE 4, was thinking why bother on spending the $, the difference 4 or 5 should not be that great.

Will search to see what the difference are before enbarking on a new task, since will be in the learning process aynway's.

Zapper, I doubt you will find a better bunch of folks anywhere on the net. The people here are always very willing to help, and very knowledgeable in the inner workings of Photoshop Elements! :D

I am use PE4 with Vista. Everything seems to function fine except the system reverts to Basic Vista colour while Elements is in use.

GeoffW:

Have you tried applying the Vista compatibility update (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932246/en-us)?

And what is Basic Vista Color? Haven't heard that term before.

I'm running PSE4 on Vista. Just upgraded to Vista recently. Not seeing any problems ... I do get a notice that there are problems, but haven't had any. Of course, I don't use it quite as fancy as lots of folks do...

Is there a list of problems somewhere? I'd try a few if there was.

As I said Elements 4 works fine. But when you start it Vista warns you (you can stop the nag screen) that “The color scheme has been changed to Windows Vista Basic.” It also points out that the computer will automatically return to Windows Vista Aero when the program is closed.

As for the quality of colour - I can see no difference. I am willing to soldier on with E4 and wait for E6 before considering an upgrade.
