View Full Version : Corey Barker Podcast 5/2/2007 Lighting Effects

Since I reported last week about podcast viewing problems, I thought it only fair to report good news.
This lastest video tutorial "Lighting Effects" (again in the QuickTime .mov format) downloaded very well from iTunes as well as from this web site. The video/audio playback was good, and the content interesting.

ATR: That's strange - I don't usually have any any problems but today I am - both with that one and Matt's Photoshop Killer Tip. They get stuck while downloading in i-tunes. Maybe there's a rotating black-out policy in effect :)

What happens if you down MK's from http://www.photoshopkillertips.com and CB's from this web site? Do you have the same downloading problems today?
In spite of rather frequent updates of its software by i-Tunes, I find that it does have its unique happenings.
For now, I will blame this on me for being a jinx with this Thread.

I downloaded Corey's two latest podcasts from iTunes yesterday and when I tried to play them, they were strange colors and pixelated and no sound. So I deleted them and am going to try again today.

I didn't have any problems at all downloading this podcast but I just wanted to give Corey a great big KUDOS! for sharing such a cool and useful technique. (not that the other ones weren't:) ) but I just think this one was very nice and different.

i can't seem to get the 'layered effects' podcast to play, i downloaded the file to my desktop but then when i tried to open it i got an error saying it wasn't a .mov file .. so next i tried to downloading through itunes and i received this error 'there was a problem adding 'layered effects' to ITunes. The file might be corrupted or a file type that ITunes cannot play.' any help would be appreciated

Pinkpepper,
I'm having EXACTLY the same problems as you. Either I get an error message telling me it's not a .mov file, or this message:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.
Also tried through iTunes & that wouldn't work either:(

It is not just you. I just downloaded Layer Effect from this web site to my Desktop. THE MANAGEMENT HAS A PROBLEM, not you.
This file which took about 10 plus minutes to download last week now downloaded in less than 5 minutes. And, when I right clicked this download on the Desktop, followed by OPEN WITH QuickTime, there was the message:
Error - 2048: the file is not a movie file.
Maybe they are Archived it off the availability list??? Webmaster needs to be contacted.

Elements Podcast Subscribers,
In an effort to provide you with high quality video, you may find the last few podcasts have been much larger. That being said, obviously, depending on your internet connection speed, these will take longer to download than usual.
A few things to keep in mind with these podcasts:
-You must have the latest quicktime installed from http://www.quicktime.com for these to work for you. These videos are in QuickTime format and will not open with anything else (i.e. will not open with Windows Media Player).
If you find that you get an error message when trying to open a podcast in iTunes, we find that 99% of the time it's because of these reasons:
-The movie didn't download completely, even though it may look like it has. You need to delete the one you downloaded and try again.
-Your QuickTime installation is either out of date, or corrupt; you need to re-install QuickTime
If you are having trouble with your particular machine, you can always troubleshoot your QuickTime installation by going here: http://www.apple.com/support/quicktime/
I hope this helps, and I hope you all enjoy the high quality podcasts that we've provided. :)

I finally managed to download it & watch it. It took much longer to download so I suspect that despite having the latest versions of everything it just wasn't completely downloading before. I noticed that the quality of the recording was much better than previous podcasts.
Wish I had a suitable image to practise the technique on!

Hi ...
Must admit that I am getting fed up of downloading large files ... so I have decided not to bother anymore. Quite a few people have slower connection speeds which makes downloading them a real pain.
I have all the latest versions yet I have downloaded the last two and they just don't play ... I have no problems at all with any other podcasts. Also I have no problems at all with Bert Monroy's really high quality ones .. So if its a problem at my end well it only seem to be a problem with one set of podcasts ....
... Umm and after spending so long waiting for them to download I just have no desire to start all over again ... :(
I'll wait for the book to come out ... :)

Wendy,
Although I appreciate the management taking time to respond, I echo your sentiments about these problems seeming to single out Photoshop podcasts more often than not recently.
In my situation, high speed download, latest versions, etc., so how come? The response is generic and would handle generic situations, but the recent situations do not seem fall under the generic umbrella.
So, we wait and see and keep an open mind.

I finally got the 5/2/2007 to download and play.(If anyone is a naap member Corey said he did a tut there getting the same effect using channels. Sunlight through Trees)
It took about 6 tries, it would get about 3/4 or more the way and then stop. I still haven't gotten the one from last week, iTunes says it's likely a server overload.:( I too have DSL and the latest Quicktime etc.
As an aside what happens to partially downloaded files? Are they floating around somewhere? That was a lot of mbs. Should I clean them up?

Hi Ellen ...
Thanks for the information ... I downloaded it a while ago from the NAPP site and there it is 11.5MB :)
I think I prefer that size :)

Ok I'm confused...I downloaded the 2 killer tips layers and lighting effect both in under 2 minutes total at home on roadrunner service. Also downloaded them on the clunky machine. No errors on either and both play just fine.
This is *not* a generic response as I have download them and am unable to cause problems with either the download or the playing. it was about 9:30 at night when I hit the download but I can't stay home to download them in prime daytime to test them....or can I
So while I appreciate your frustration with having problems, it appears to not be the site. I'm happy to try anything thing else y'all think will help:)

Tami,
Thanks for going those extra miles as usual.
As per one of my earlier posts in this Thread, I also was getting that error message trying to open Layered Effects downloaded from your web site. That was about 3:30 pm this afternoon.
After seeing your evening results, I decided to give this another try. About 10:45 pm I downloaded from your site Layered Effects to my Desktop. It took 10 minutes to download. The file was 67.1 MB. After right clicking the file and Open With QuickTime, a perfect file played back great video/audio.
I think that someone said that iTunes thought this was a Server overload problem. What do you think about that idea and, if it is likely, how can this issue be resolved? How does this Server business work? Who maintains this Server?

If you are using Windows alone, they probably go into Temp. If you regularly clean up your HD, you can get rid of them. If you use a download manager, they will most likely be in another folder.
BTW, I just realized that the podcasts are available to anyone, not just subscribers. Duh! Wonder if all forum members know that?

Hi Tami ...
I just downloaded them again from the subscriber area (exactly as I did yesterday) ... and this time they run perfectly ..
... I no longer get the message "QuickTime cannot open the file: "week19.mov"
it is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)"
Umm ... I don't think the problem was my end :)
Wendy
PS ... By the way they are both excellent !!

Yesterday I was only able to open not to save the video & it took forever to download. After reading Wendy's post I thought I'd have another go....it took less than 4 mins to download and I could save it with no error messages when I tried to open it! Go figure that!
Still can't find an image to practise on though:(

Morning Everyone:)
I will speak with Kev this morning to see if he can find anything common with the various issues and let you guys know.
As for the iTunes issue, that would be out of our hands *unless* there is a problem with our file, otherwise we upload the feed to them and it goes from there.
I will also verify that the file wasn't changed between yesterday afternoon and last night when I downloaded them sucessfully:)
Hopefully we can find a happy file that works for everyone:D
As always thanks for your patience and feedback!

I do sometimes get the impression that the further away from Florida you are the more chances there are of getting corrupt. I thought that wasn't supposed to happen as files skip around the world but maybe it can.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one having problems. I'm about 20 miles from the PSE Office, so being in Florida didn't make a difference. I'm on high speed internet also.
I have been able to download and watch both videos now, however I cannot save them to my hard drive as before. I have to choose the option to download and play them immediately. So each time I want to view them, I have to sit through the download which is taking about 12 minutes.
I also noticed that Firefox didn't work, I had to use Internet Explorer and I did update the Quicktime program.
As a side note: I think Corey is doing a great job for us PSE users!!

Maybe we can resolve your issue by comparing details....
I have Mozilla Firefox as my default browser and my operating system is Windows XP
In Firefox, Tools Menu/Options/Downloads. In Downloads I select "Save all files to this folder". I then select Desktop (you can browse for another location if you want to).
If I go to the home page of this web site, and hit the download of the Layered Effect and pick the Save to disc option of the dialog, that file is downloaded to my Desktop. You can view from there by right clicking and pressing Open With QuickTime.
After that, you can leave the Layered Effect download on your Desktop for another viewing. Additionally, you could:
(1) right click, hit copy, go to a place like My Videos and then Edit Menu/Paste
(there is then a copy if you really did want a copy) OR
(2) go to Windows Explorer and move (or copy) to another location (if you want to do that).
I tried all that again this morning, and it worked that way.

ATR- I'm with you on the step by step...Firefox/Windows XP etc...
I'm downloading the file now to the folder I have created for Elements.
It is possible that I have not tried this since I updated the Quicktime program yesterday afternoon.
We'll see how it goes...the download time started at 13 minutes.
I really liked this Layered Effects Video

Thanks ATR, I might not have tried again if you hadn't posted.

I just updated Quicktime, and saved both the files. The Lightening effects video worked but the layer effects still gives me the error, "not a movie file".
How can we get this message to the powers that be?

Dina,
Suggest you just keep on trying. I had the same problem & it took about eight tries over two or three days before I managed to successfully download both files!
