I had to go this morning and take a new head shot for my business cards.
After he took the pictures, he brought me into his workspace so I could pick which one I wanted and then I watched while he worked on me. :o
He was working in Photoshop 7.
First he cloned the wrinkles under my eyes.
Then he applied some kind of action that blurred my skin tone.
Went back and erased my eyes, lips, earrings...
All the normal stuff I know to do.
But......
Then you set his brush tool to multiply (opacity at 6) and used it on both side of my nose, under my jaw line and on the very sides of my face.
Changed his blend mode to screen and used the brush on the 4 points.
My cheeks, a dash on my chin and on my forehead.
I was so impressed. It really made a difference and I have never seen any of this mentions before.
Just wanted to share. :D

Hi Kim
There are many ways to apply that look... I believe it is called the Dior Look.
Rather than Multiply and screen it is also done with soft light layers.
This (http://retouchpro.com/tutorials/?m=show&id=209) tutorial is an example of that look. This uses a large amount of blur and is exaggerated... but the same idea.

Some of the stuff in the tutorial are CS2 but can be done. But I am having a big problem with the layer mask. I can't get it to black. I haven't used mask much so don't know what I am doing wrong. Can someone help. I have Grant's, Graffi's and Richard's Hidden Powers. Why can't I change the mask to black. I have tried holding the alt as I click the action but it isn't working.

Kim
Hit D then try it.. you likely have a dark gray as your FG colour. or opacity??
AngelicKim
May 2nd, 2007, 07:42 PM
Gary, that didn't work either. I have set my foreground and background colors to black and it still doesn't work. When I click the action for the layer mask the FG changes to white.

Kim, click inside the layer mask to activate it and then try the paint bucket.
Sometimes mine acts up and that is the only way I can get it to fill. :)

Kimi, hope you don't mind me posting my attempt here.
Couldn't quite get what the instructions had yet. Here is my before and after of what I have got so far. Oh, this is my son Chance. I took the photo this afternoon when he got home from school. Can't believe he will be 13 in two months. Oh, and I just realised I forgot to remove the shadow on the left.
Before

After

And I had to also do the porcelain effect. I just love it.

Oh and I should mention I got a huge kiss on the cheek for getting rid of the acne. He wished I could do it in real life.

Kimi,
Thanks for the info! Now I need to find time to try it...
Kim,
Great work, your son is very handsome! I've also noticed the other new images you've added to your gallery and haven't taken the time to comment.
I was going to show a link to a particular one I noticed this morning, but I got the dreaded "Error: The NAPP gallery is currently overloaded. Please check back later." :( (It worked about 20 minutes ago when I first logged on.)

OK, here is my new picture. :o (no laughing!)
I figure if I am using it in all of my newspaper advertising you might as well see it also.
Take a look at the brushing he did. I have tried it and can get the multiply to work if I use grey at about 5% opacity. I do get good results with screen at around 23%.

Kimi, very beautiful photo. It sure is hard to get just the right results isn't? It is nice to put a face to the person. Alot of that going on this week. Funny how in Bill's theme this week everyone is hiding their faces though.

Thanks for posting your photo, Kimi. It looks great and it's so nice to put a face with a name.
I remember quite a while back many of us participated in a quiz where we submitted a baby photo and a current photo and members had to match them. We got to meet quite a few members "face to face" at that time, but since then we've added many new members.
We should do another project to "expose" our faces to each other again. Of course, there is a place in our forum profile where we can upload a photo, but most members don't.

I couldn't see. :(
He worked so fast and it looked like most things were set as actions. I did see him change the blend mode on the top and pick his brush but I never saw the color.

Wow Kimi, great photo. Nice to meet your face:D
The steps look complicated to me, but maybe one day, if they come out with an easier version.
Diana, i like the baby picture idea too.
BTW what is the Bill's theme, guess I've missed something else.

Hi Kimi
How nice to meet you!:)
It is great seeing the face behind the name - great photo.
So yes, I agree with Diana, more pictures of us.
Now all I have to do is find a good picture where I don't look like I am chewing a wasp:D .....and then enhance it some!

Kimi,
I'm still a little lost (understanding brushing in multiply and or screen). Maybe after you make more progress figuring out the technique, this would be a good homework assignment, getting, of course, some sort of step-by-step tutorial.
Hey, you did ask for suggestions :)
Rusty
PS - sell enough houses and your agency will put you on that billboard!

Lovely photo Kim!!!
About a new contest... I've done contests where we've had to guess from pictures of the back of heads, legs, and bums... Since baby snaps has been done, no need to repeat. If you are interested in another contest, submit ideas and I'm willing to help run it. Last one was fun.

I'm in agreement with Rusty... Great idea for "homework" but I too would need a tutorial geared for PSE. I sometimes have trouble converting things from the full version to PSE. (Correction..lol I ALWAYS have trouble converting from full to PSE.)
If anyone knows where I can find a tutorial that would explain the DIOR effect for PSE, I would greatly appreciate it. If there isn't one out there, could anyone provide an explanation that would be easier to understand? :)

not sure If I am any good at this but all I do is fix the image (blemishes, etc) duplicate it -change to screen mode -merge down _ duplicate 2 times. gaussian blur the heck out of it and change that layers screen mode to multiply....hope this helps.

I tried this method on one of my daughter's pictures. After reading it, I thought is seemed familiar. I think it's called the Orton Effect. I love this type of look but I think the Dior Effect is maybe a little more detailed/sharp.
Thanks for reminding me of this technique, though! :) I need to use it more often.
