Here is a poor copy of an old slide projection with very poor color among other faults. All I have done to it is crop and lightened it. After a couple of hours trying this and that, I decided I REALLY need help. Is there a tut. or video that could teach me something or can anyone out there in cyber space help to get rid of that red cast and noise or dust, or whatever the speckles are. Ihave a series of these birthday shots and they are all alike as far as quality. Bill, gave it a quick attempt in PSE5 and Noiseware from Imagonics. First I used Noiseware (available free here (http://www.imagenomic.com/products.aspx)) and under Noise levels I increased the luminance and color to 60% and Noise suppression Luminance to 70% and color to 80%. Saved and opened in PSE5. Did Enhance>color variations>saturation>less. Then still there Midtones>decrease red>decrease green. Then Lighten. Then click OK.

Good job Kim
I have switched to Vista and I am having a tough time getting drivers for my calibration hardware so I have no idea if the colors I am applying are even near correct.
So please forgive me if they are way off.
But what can I do but wait…
I thought the picture was too yellow and over saturated. To neutralize the caste I used a combination of selective color and color balance. Then I desaturated which seemed to reduce the red and magenta.
I got rid of the yellow but in doing so I lost the lion and rabbit so I added some yellow back on a layer set to color mode.
I also made the back wall to blue I think… so I added color on another layer set to color mode.
I hate to say it but I went back and forth between adjustment layers so I can’t give the settings.

Kim I like the way you improved on the lighting around her and also he skin tones. I am working on some pictures now which will present similar problems. I am going to say You fix Kim and see if it is a help for me

Butch: Nicely done as always. I took a look at the RGB components and found that the blue and to a somewhat lesser extent the green layers in the original had badly deteriorated - a common problem with old slides and color prints. Cases like that are pretty hard to fix because its not a color cast, some of the critical color information is missing.
In cases like that I've had some success in the past by getting a better scan by boosting the blue and green in the scanning software. Worth taking a look at your scanner and seeing what it can do. Some of the color correction capabilities of scanners work pretty well and recovering some of that missing information make post processing easier.

Wow! talk about great help. Thanks Kim, Butch, and Tony. 1st of all, I copied and printed your responses. It will take a little study and practise on my part. I am sorry Tony, but your help is beyond my capability. The slides were put on a disc by Walmart and I am sure their equipment can not be adjusted as you suggest. Kim, you said Noiseware is free but it said the trial offer has a watermark on it. Do you think that I as a beginner should purchase it? I am just asking an opinion, not advice. The results of all your work is just unbeleivable. Thanks again...BillandCat

Kim, I went to the link for noiseware and downloaded it. It is an add-on and I don't know how to use an add on in PSE 5. Also, I too wonder about the watermark issue that bill mentioned (since I can't figure out how to open the product, I have to take Bill's word for it). Any help would be appreciated because if their products help me, I might be interested in ordering them.
TIA

Bill, The Noiseware has 3 versions. One free, Community and the other two are pay. Go to this (http://www.imagenomic.com/download.aspx) link and scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. The very last one is the free download for Windows.
As for the plug-ins download, I haven't used it. They didn't have that when I got the free version. You cacn install the plug-ins into PSE5 by copying the plug-ins to C:Program Files>Adode>Photoshop Elements 5>Plug-ins.

Is this the place to ask computer questions? If so, here is my problem...ME. I went to the Noiseware site, scrolled down, downloaded the mac version and then DB (dumb Bill) stopped cold. I know very little about computers and when the instructions said "could not detect any host application" duh. What do I do now? Can someone tell me in dumb speak instead of geek speak if it can be done on my mac or not? BillandCat

Bill sounds like you downloaded one of the plug-ins and not the stand alone version. I'll check the site and see what I can figure out.
Edit: Bill, looks like I have steered you in the wrong direction on this one. Looks like only the plug-ins are available for Mac and they aren't free beyond the trial. And I don't know anything about Mac's to help out with the error you got. Hopefully someone else that uses them will know what to do here.
