I just came across a basket of 3.5 floppy disks with tons of photos on them. They are from about 10+ years ago when they first started offering pics to be put on the disks.

My problem: Their extension is .pic How do I ever get them on to my computer??? I know I can't get them onto my imac as it doesn't have a 3.5 drive (only CD/DVD) and when I tried in the pc, it said there was nothing to support that extension.

Help!!!! i would love to get those pics!! They are from when the kids were really small!

Coleen, I was just looking around the internet and came across this (http://www.highend3d.com/downloads/tools/photoshop_plugins/31.html)
Maybe this will help view them.

Actually I think .pic is an old Apple image format so you might well be able to open them on your Mac. Can't you copy to a CD and try it?

Jancy:

Thanks that looks like it will work!

Tony:

I will certainly try that it is worth a shot! I would have never thought that that was an apple format!

I also just fired up my really old computer with Windows 93 on it ... maybe I can copy them to another disk and then load them on my windows xt computer and burn them to a cd that way too!

Phew! I am tired already!

Thanks guys!!! That is why I love this forum ... so many helpful folks!

Hi ...

You need the Mac equivalent of Irfanview ... Graphic Converter

http://www.lemkesoft.com/

Hopefully that will open them ...

If not then duplicate one of them (using Option then drag & drop into a folder) and just remove the file ending (and the .). Then double click on the image (not in Elements) and the Mac will attempt to open it ... It may just work :)

Wendy,
IrfanView lists .PIC as a readable file format. That would mean, it would open the images on a PC. I have not tried it and it may only work in the just released IrfanView version 4.0.

Juergen, I don't see .pic as a choice in IrfanView 3.98. Guess I'd better get on the case and download 4.0!

Hi Chuck and Tony,

That's how I found out about 4.0, because .PIC was not listed on my 3.99 either. So I looked at the website and there was the new version and also did the .PIC show up on the list... ;)

Of course, Jodi brought it up first! :)

Thanks everyone, I am trying some of the various options! I haven't dowloaded irfanview yet, as I can't get on the pc (KIDS!!!!). I think even if this takes too long I will be ok, as I have been going through my boxes of photos and it looks like I have all the originals that I could scan if necessary.

Wendy: I can't do it on my mac (bummer!) because my imac only has a cd/dvd drive, and these are on those little black hard 3.5 floppy disks!

You guys are simply the best!!! I don't care what Bonzo says!!!! I like this forum just as it is!!!

Jancy:

I have been looking for a certain photo on those disk and I found the original .... finally.... it is a little scratched, but I will use this one and do a little cloning.

I want to use Maryellens first day of school (kindergarten) and her senior picture for the invitation to her HS graduation party. I will post the invitation!

I am also enjoying seeing what is on those old (yet only 10 years!) disks! Old to me means about 90 years anymore!

Chuck, yup i don't have the latest version either...think mine is 1.0 :o ...I noticed it has come a long way since then...though I really do only use it to open files that can't be opened otherwise. So far so good though I probably ' should ' download the latest version just in case the day comes that it's no longer available... for free :)

Colleen - you can get a 3.5 reader for your Mac -
check here
http://www.imation.com/products/diskettes_storage/usb_drive.html

I have one that I've had for a long time - since my kids went to a school that only used pcs and we had a mac - they could do files (e.g. office by microsquish) at school - bring them home and work on them on the mac and record back to them.
It has worked great for me in the past.... since not too many 3.5 floppies still around that are actually used.

Guess this adds one more possibility for you.
