Layers Class DAy 21 Bonus

Working thru Day 21 Bonus and I've bult my inner shadows, inverted selected the picture frame, then inverse selection and it looks like his screen but when I try to step thru the adjustment layer coloring instead of coloring the inverse selection it is coloring everything....? I'm sure it's something little...thanks in advance for the help.

After a couple of tries last night without success, I started completely from scratch this morning and got it to work this time. Not sure what I did different though? One thing I could not get to work was the 'Select/Deselect' to clear the marching ants....I ended up just using the 'Escape' key to remove the ants, is that fair?
