Need some feed back on B W .I feel the whites get blown out when i try B W. Hamish

For many pictures, when I do a B&W conversion, the result often looks too flat. Consequently, I usually end up clicking the "more contrast" thumbnail. And, of course, that can blow the highlights.
It doesn't look like that happened to your barn picture. Nothing looks "blown" to me.

I use Enhance Color > Color Variations and just click away playing with the thumbnails and combinations thereof. I don't know what the scientific approach should be, ignorance is bliss, I just click away :)
When it gets too screwed up, reset and start all over.
Even though you have already converted the image to B&W, selecting More/Less Red/Green/Blue does have an effect. You may have to reconvert to B&W more than once.
This doesn't always work. Then I may try a Brightness/Contrast Adjustment Layer, adjust for mid-tones, and then mask the now blown highlights.
Most of the people that post B&W conversions here do a better job than I usually do. I'm plugging away, still learning. :)
