This is a side effect of pseudogrey surfing. The are at least 2 gray scales! One NTSC comes from TV and is what most programs use when converting to gray scale the other is CIE which gives the picture a different look, to me a more realistic black and white, YMMV but I'm in way over my head here and would appreciate any knowledgeable input and expansion as can be provided. It can be generated by using the pixiedust plugin in the pseudogrey thread.
