View Full Version : Where is the "file information box" in PSE3?

Hi.
I am looking for quick info about my photo: dimensions and resolution. The help file for PSE3 says the following:
"To display the image size of an open file
In the Editor, click the file information box at the bottom of the document, and hold down the mouse button. The box displays the width and height of the image (both in pixels and in the unit of measurement currently selected for the rulers), the number of channels, and the image resolution."
This is EXACTLY what I want, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out where this "file information box" is located at the "bottom of the document."
Please help!
Thanks.

hi there ...
.. and welcome to the forum :)
When you have an image on screen there is a sort of gray frame around it ... and there is a white section that has some writing and an arrow on it. Click on the arrow and you will see a pop up menu which allows you to access more information :)
Do let us know how you go on and if that is what you are looking for

I think I should have said that I am on a PC. I don't have a down arrow on the white area around the photo. There is information on the top of the photo, in a white border, and if I right-click the border, I get an choice of Duplicate, Image Size, Canvas Size. If I choose Image Size, I get the information I am looking for - dimensions and resolution - but it seems awfully roundabout to have to open what is essentially the Resize dialog to see basic information about the photo.
Is there a way to see this little bit of information on the PC version without having to open the Resize dialog?
Thanks.

Wendy - can you post a screen image. I went looking for this (which I remember from PSE2) but couldn't find it on PSE3. I have a File Info Palette which shows some info but not pixel size and resolution. I've been going to the Image, Resize, Image size dialogue to get that info. Sounds like there is another place to get it but I can't find it
I have the image, a gray frame and below that the photo bin but no white section like you describe. BTW I use the Windows version so I'll feel real cheated if Macs have it and Windows don't :D
Note added: NerdyMom: just saw your post after I'd posted mine. What I see is just what you describe.

Hi there ...
... here is a link to mine ... as you can see there is an info section below the image:

I have just had a thought ... the Mac doesn't have a background gray workspace which I think the windows version has. Is the info at the bottom edge of the workspace itself?? ...

Hi Wendy,
The PC doesn't have that bar at the bottom of the document at all.
No, that's not the information. I'm looking for something like "800w x 800h, 200 px/in", something like that. I'm guessing if you clicked on that down arrow, you would see that info. I can only seem to get that info by going to the Resize dialog on the PC.
What's frustrating is that the Help file for my version describes it the way it appears on the Mac. How annoying that I seem to have Help for Mac users.
Any other ideas?
Thanks!

If you right click on your photo thumbnail in the photo bin and choose file info, you will get a menu that gives you several different sizing info options.

Tried that but all I can see if the EXIF info that came from the camera - not the dimensions of the image in Editor.

Agreed - this does not work for all file types, either. It works if you happen to have a PSD open, but not if you have a TIFF or a JPEG.

If you add the INFO pallette to your pallette bin you can get the actual sizes of the picture you are working on as well as the numeric values of the color under your cursor when you are pointing to your image and lots of other info.

I have to admit that I never really look at the image size
... and if I do then I use Image>Resize>Image Size
Using the box at the bottom of the image gives you the size (inches etc) but no info on resolution ... so its not a great deal of use for that. There is, however, another feature that is brilliant ... efficiency. From that you can tell, among other things, if Elements is having to access the scratch disc :)

What the heck is a scratch disk??? :?

Sherry,
Photoshop uses a scratch disk file (i.e., temporary disk space used for storing data and performing computations) when there is insufficient RAM for image editing.

Sing that to your favorite melody...
In Windoze version of PSE3
:arrow: Select Window -> Info
 Look in the pallete Bin for the info box

OK - I had to test my memory so I fired up my old computer with PSE2 on it and lo and behold that file info is there as advertised - and it works just like the PSE3 help file (and the PSE2 manual) says. Here's a PSE2 image with that very useful information:
http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?pic=1VhvRVt4Ml9jc6cpeLt77IewiYpq01
Now in PSE3 the status bar at the bottom has gone and the information on document size, timing, efficiency etc has been moved into the info palette, but that handy little pop up box with pixel size and resolution has apparently vanished - despite it still being advertised in the help manual.
Did someone at Adobe forget? Is it really there still but I just can't find it?

Did you read my post?
I gave you instructions for finding it.

Brice you're onto something here.
If you choose the right pointing arrow at the bar level (top) and then choose Palette Options -- where it shows inches -- change it to Pixels and Voila, the dimension of the document in Pixel x Pixel results.
I do believe that is what is being sought here.

Brice/Will:
Realise you can get the pixel dimensions from the info palette but it's not as helpful as in PSE2 - where you could get size in pixels and inches and the resolution all with just one wave of the mouse.
AFIK the only way to see the image resolution in PSE3 is to use the image resize dialogue - or is there something in that info palette that I'm missing :?:

If you right click an image in the photo bin in Editor and choose 'File Info' and then choose Camera Data 2, you will get the size in pixels and the resolution. Then clicking the Info pallette can be used to get the dimensions in inches etc. Kind of roundabout way, should be available in one place.
If you use the Organizer on a PC then pixel dimension and resolution info is in the Properties box if it is selected.

I've never touched PSE2. I was just concentrating on how to get the info... One step back, two steps forward. Gain some stuff in PSE3 and lose some stuff in PSE3...

What is really odd about the whole thing is that it's in the Help File for PSE3 with the same description as in the PSE2 user guide (one of the best things about PSE1 and 2 is that they actually came with a manual and I still refer to them a lot with PSE3 8) . My guess is that the feature disappeared when they rearranged the screen in PSE3 and someone forgot to take it out of the help file.
