I would like to put a few photos, a collection, onto a cd to send to someone. When I try to do so I have a choice of putting everything on the cd or putting just those photos that I haven't backed up before.
How do I go about getting just one bunch of photos, a collection, on the cd without doing a slide show or the like???

You can use Click and Drag -- so if it is a collection -- just CTRl+A to select all of the collection, then click and drag it to the disk that you want them on. It will copy the pictures to the drive.

From what you said I think you are trying to use backup -- which isn't the best way for this type of project.

OK, I did the Control/A thing and that selected the photos I wanted. Thanks for that part. But I am not sure where to drag them. Where is the disk? The disk is in the drive but where do I find the symbol for the disk?

Go to My Computer -- you can get to it from the START then select the disk (drive) you want to put the pictures on. Then after CTRl+A click and then drag them to the folder that represents the drive. It should copy them to the disk.

psummers and Will,

I have never met a computer questions that did not draw me in. So forgive me and here goes….

psummers, I am not clear just where you are coming from. For example, is your operating system Windows XP? Are you planning on using the burn feature from XP or another burn software such as Nero, Record Now, other? Are you talking about working with a collection of photos on the hard drive (maybe all in a place like My Pictures) or about working with Collection as in a collection of photos in a Photoshop Elements Organizer? Is Photoshop Elements 5.0 or an earlier version involved in this question or is this a standalone CD Computer Burn issue? Is the order of the pictures on the CD important to you?

All that being asked, here are some things that you may want to consider:
(1) Given a group of photos on the hard drive (ex. My Pictures) and you want to burn them to CD using the XP burn feature, then before you do anything else, go to My Computer and right click the CD drive that you want to use. Select Properties and go to the Recording Tab and make sure your have “Enable CD Recording on this drive” checked off. Then, when you open your photos and select the ones that you want on your CD, you will have included the option to Burn to CD (under Picture Tasks in the options column to the left). That option will not be there if you do not Enable CD Recording beforehand.

(2) If you are going to burn to CD (no Photoshop involved) using a burn software such as Nero, Record, etc., then start by opening the burn software, followed by accessing the photos in My Pictures through the “Add to” of the burn software.

(3) If you are talking about burn to CD using a Photoshop Elements burn software, then please indicate version, and I will suggest a step by step through that once I know the version.

(3) There are all sorts of tips about naming (numbering) to get the desired order of photos on the CD, multisessions, etc. but I will leave that for another time and after more details.

Here are a couple of my thoughts for your consideration. I burn a few pictures, groups of pictures, etc. often. I use NERO or SONIC with little or no preference and equivalenbtly good results from Windows XP. I very rarely store anything in "My Pictures" Rather, I store my images by date, title, chronological shooting order as taken with edited files stored with the original image. You can drag and drop files or folders from nearly any location and you need not do this only from "My Pictures". You also can browse and locate each image rather than drag and drop the image if you prefer when using the aforementioned software. The process is little different than what you would use to put a couple of pictures on an external hard drive, flash memory or the like.
Best of success,
Tom

OK when I started this I was in PSE 5.
I had a collection of photos that I wanted to put on a CD. When I went to the only place in PSE that I knew about to do this (backup). I was offered the choice of putting all 6,000 plus photos on the disk(s) or just adding the ones that weren't already on a disk. I tried the help system but got no further than I was on my own.

Will rightly diagnosed that I was in the wrong spot.

My operating system is Windows XP, and I do not know that as well as I should. I have no other systems or software involved in this mission. I thought I simply wanted to go from PSE 5 and take my little collection to a disc that is in my cpu.

I tried Will's method, got to the symbol of the disk drive that held my cd but found no folder and was unable to enable the drag ... all it did was reduce the selection to one photo. But I had nowhere to put it even if it had worked.

My next step was to call my grandson who has a good working knowledge of computers, but knows nothing about Elements. He will come tomorrow.

Any help would be appreciated

psummers,

All is not lost. There are several approaches to get the end result that you mentioned....I would probably just use the copies on the hard drive and burn to CD with the software that came with the DVD/CD burner. The numbering (or naming) of such files will determine the order that they will be on the CD. So keep that in mind.

But, you were not wrong in looking for a Photoshop Elements 5.0 route. Where you need to look in Photoshop Elements 5.0 is:
File
Copy/Move Offine
(if you are interested in multisessions, make sure you go to Preferences (I think under Edit Menu) and check off "enable multisessions" if you want to write more than once on the same CD.

There is a big write up in the program's Help titled "To copy or move items offline". Give it a look tonight before your grandson comes by tomorrow. I have Photoshop Elements 3.0, but did tryout the 5.0 version. So, I need to dust off my memory about all the dos and don'ts. If I recall, just march ahead without checking off any of the options initially offered in the Wizard. But, it works just fine. There is a Photoshop Elements 5.0 Missing Manual book that goes into all the details.

Let me know if you would like any more details. Do not give up.

Just a partial recall, Photoshop Elements 5.0 (Organizer)......

File Menu
Select "Copy/Move Offline"
Copy/Move Options dialog appears (that is the one that I left unchecked and hit next)
Next, is the Copy/Move Offline dialog
There you select your Destinaton Drive.
Name
Hit done.

Give it a try and see what happens to get a good overview of your choices.

The latter was just a rough path. You do have to highlight the photos. I did not mean to imply that you did not have to.

I want to thank you all for your wonderful help.
Finding the help item (goodness, even the "help" has a learning curve!!) and the guidance you have all given enabled me to do it. I am grateful.

And now when my grandson comes he can hang a picture and take down some blinds for me;)

Again, thank you all!:D
