View Full Version : Putting an image(s) into type

This thread is for all of you Photoshop Elements experts out there in cyberland:

I would like to put several (4) images into a type layer that has an entertainment artist's name on it (4 letters). I would like to put a single image into one (1) letter on the type layer; put another image into another letter; etc.; etc. Do you think this is possible?

Would I have to have a layer for each letter in the artist's name? Or would I be able to just use one type layer with four (4) images above that layer? And then can I group all four (4) of the image layers together with the type layer?

I have instructions on how to put one (1) image into a type layer by grouping the layers together, but I was hoping someone on this board could tell me if what I would like to do (use 4 images) is even possible, and if it is, could I get instructions on how to do it (or try to do it)?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Bernie,

Here's one way...

Have the text on its own layer, so that there is transparency.

Arrange the four images on layers above the text. Crop or resize them so that there is no overlap with the wrong letters. Starting with the first layer above the text, Group the layers. Repeat for each layer.

You end up with something like this:

Is this what you have in mind, roughly?

That looks exactly like what I would like to do! However, that brings me to another question: how do I get the four images in the proper space on their individual layers? The answer's probably something really easy because I've worked on something similar (images in different positions on their own layers -- like the Warhol-effect video on this site; I've done that); however, I'm at a loss right now on how to do it. Perhaps when I'm home this evening or this weekend, I'll watch that video again and see if that helps.

In the meantime, thanks for your answer and for understanding what I was talking about.

Bernie,

With each of the four images on their own layers, you could use Free Transform to resize them on their layer, and then reposition them above the corresponding letter.

Hi Bernie-

After you clip the image layer to the text layer, you can target the image layer and use the Move tool (V) to fine-tune the positioning of the image within the letter.

Another thing you could do is make sure the image layer is above the text layer, then lower the opacity of the image enough to see the text below. Position the image, then push the opacity back to 100% and clip it to the text layer.

Thanks a lot, people! Looks like I've got some work to try this weekend. Don't know how much I will get done, though, since it's supposed to be a glorious weekend here in central Illinois (75 and sunny both Saturday and Sunday)!

Thanks again for all of your suggestions and have a great weekend!

As always there's another way but I don't know that it's any more flexible. You can select a letter then use a selection of what you want in the letter edit > paste into but I think only after you've rasterized/simplified the text.
That was explained badly -here's a screen shot.

My favorite way of accomplishing this is the way Ellen suggested.

This is how I do it.

Using type tool, select a very large - very heavy - black font - make it a graphic

Open the first photo
select> all
edit> copy

Go back to the first letter in your text graphic -
select the first letter using the magic wand
edit> paste into selection

You can then use the move tool to move the photo around - resize it -
then click enter or click the checkmark - whatever

After you hit enter, the photo will be "one" with the letter -

Do this for each additional letter.

I hope you can see my finished project. And I hope I can remember exactly how I did this because I'd like to do some more manipulating with text sizes and photo sizes, and maybe even some different backgrounds.

Thanks for all your help.
