Hi Guys

I was just wondering what your thoughts are on scanning in and sharing embelishments.
Not necessarily sharing here ..just sharing in general.

My daughter keeps buying those 3x6 (or whatever) embelishment cards and I keep saying to her we should scan them in and she could have all sorts of these things forever.

Good idea? bad idea?

My guess is they are probably copyrighted so sharing wouldn't be allowed.

My thoughts are FWIW...if I buy them, I'll sometimes scan for me.

for example I bought some embellishments, and used them on a real 12x12 scrapbook page. Then I decided I wanted to make a digital collage and print it for a frame. I scanned it. But it is only for me, well, my daughter has the collage. Her scrapbooks that I have done are still living here at my house.
I wouldn't scan someones stuff and then go giving it away.

I'm not sure if they are 3x6 .. just those sleves you get at the scrapbooking stores with pictures/stickers/letters on them.

My thinking being (not regarding sharing) if you buy a downloaded package you can use it forever..not just on one layout once.

I am still not sure what we are talking about? What exactly are "Embellishment Cards"?

Ok, Here is an example:

I created the center part of this as a digital birth announcement, and printed it. I bought the shadow box. I also bought all the embellishments that surround it, the ribbon and the background papers. The charms were in 2 different little packages for 4.99ea (I think). The card stock circle was part of another package.
Then I mailed the whole thing to my niece.
IF...I had wanted to keep those little charms to use for a future digital creation, I could have scanned them to use again. But I didn't.

Most of the "fru-fru" added to paper scrapbook pages, come on a little card and hang on a rack in the store.

And being the obsessive frequent shopper that I am...I own about a ton of them.
Hope this helps explain it.

Thank you very much! Never having created a scrapbook I am very deficient in this area, Muffled, off in the distance I hear many voices whispering "Not only in that area, Grant, not only in that area!"

My understanding of digital scrapbook stuff is that you can use it as many times as you want - and post your work on the internet - as long as your give credit to the artist.

And most TOU's allow making things to give to other people - but usually not for sale - but you cannot give the file to someone else - but you can direct them to the site to download the kit themselves.

And after trying to make my own embellishments and background paper - I know how much hard work and talent goes into making a scrapbook kit - so I understand their not wanting you to freely give it away.

But, it's so confusing, I'm almost afraid to do anything with the stuff. I don't want the artists to feel I'm abusing their talent - but if I can't post what I've done with the kit, what is the reason for even using it?

Your baby announcement page is very cute. Great idea to frame it.

I know embelishment card is not the correct term.. I could not think of a better one.:)

Any sticker thing like you can get at the dollar store.
At scrapbooking stores they sell for anywhere from $1.00 to $10.00 depending on what is in/on them.

For the record.. I haven't done any yet either.;) I just watch my daughter and tell her what she should do next.:D

Hi Janice ...

You are perfectly correct about Digital kits ... you buy them and can use them as many times as you like. You can also post the images you make to friends etc ... (although often they ask that you credit the designer when you post the image).

I think that here we are talking about the ethics of buying none digital embellishement then scanning them in and then using them digitally ...

Gary, "embellishment card" is fine.
as an obsessive, frequent shopper of the traditional scrapbook stuff, :p there IS a huge difference in what is available. I think I have seen (if not own) most all of them:o DON"T BUY AT THE DOLLAR STORE!!!

To date I have completed 10 albums.( 52-92 pages each) and have ,um I think 5 more in various stages of completion + some still in the thinking stage.. I probably have enough supply to do another 10, however...there is always new stuff:D
Bill's pretty happy I'm learning here, and trying digital , because he's real proud I'm saving money:D

Janice, Glad you like the baby shadowbox announcement.

Hi, I do a lot of digital scrapping, as well as traditional scrapping. The traditional embellishment comes with the expectation of only so many uses, like an agreement between you and the manufacturer. Let's say it's a plastic sleeve of 12 stickers. You can take those dozen stickers and cut them into microscopic pieces and use each one on a different craft item, but eventually they would be used up. That's the expectation of the manufacturer, that you will purchase, consume, and then purchase again. If we scan and then use that item digitally, it can't be used up. Once you violate the expectation of the manufacturer, that's where your line is, the one you can't cross. Now, we all know that the creation of scanners and digital cameras and photo-quality printers means we can violate that expectation to our heart's content. That's the same as copying a movie off the HBO or taking a song off a cd and burning it to your own favorites hits collection. You paid for the HBO and the CD, so technically that's your "item". The manufacturer knows you are going to do it, and they can't actually stop you, short of raiding every home in America. So then you both have to act on faith- the manufacturer does not jack his prices to compensate for the lost revenue when you don't purchase another package of stickers, and you don't digitally copy those stickers and pass them out to all your friends. It's a quid pro quo. The short answer then, is, yes, you can copy those embellies and enjoy them on your digital layouts, but don't share them and don't sell work you create using them. You bought the item, not the license. ;)

Gary,

As tempting as it might be to "scan and share" the embellishments to do so would definitely be a violation of the manufacturer's copyright. That's the beautiful thing about digital scrapbooking. There's lots of ways to reuse your digital goodies, such as resizing or recoloring with adjustment layers. Eventually you get tired of looking at the same old thing and it's back to the online store for another download.

BUT.... even when you purchase "digital" products the terms of use typically do not include the right to share, loan, rent, resell, distribute, or transfer any portion of the file.

Of course you can always make your own!
