Well we are now the proud owners of 12 baby chicks! Bekah and Ari are quite excited about all the peeping and even Rocky the rooster was a wee bit curious about what was in that box. :) And just in case anyone wants to know there are 4 Rhode Island Reds (the breed our rooster is) 4 Plymouth Barred Rocks and 4 Araucans (also know as "Easter Eggers" because they lay eggs with blue/green colored shells.) Today - 3 years ago - was Bekah's due date and since she was a "spring chick" I thought it only appropriate that we get ourselves some chicks on this date.
Maybe Ari will teach Bekah how to say "chicken" since he seems to have no problems saying it.

Thank Kim, Nancy & Kim R.
Gail - very glad to be back, flying with toddlers is challenging to say the least. And I was so glad to see our green valley - barely a hint of spring on the east coast.

Jane,
Babies, this is so nice and brings back so many memories. When I was growing up in a family of eight kids the older brothers belong to the 4H club. Now we just lived in a rural area not on a farm but we raised pigs grew corn and always had chickens and ducks and many other things that the boys brought home from the woods.
Your kids already looked totally enthralled with the chicks. Thanks for sharing this picture.

Thanks Linda, Vesta & Wendy.
I am happy to report the chicks all survived the night. Since they were just shipped the first 48 hours can be touch and go. Another day and I will start to breathe a little easier.

Thanks Norma!
Wendy - I think I'm more worried about the damage Bekah can do. She can now open all the "child proof" door knobs and went out this morning apparently to "take care of her kickens". Things got a little too quiet and I went looking for her.... good thing I did. She had broken the heat lamp and dumped the water in the pen. Some pretty cold wet chicks! Got the lamp working again and cleaned up the mess. Chicks seem to be doing okay this afternoon. Going to have to get chain locks for the doors and install them very high up if I'm going to keep my little escape artist indoors!

Thanks Linda!
Wendy - the only time Bekah isn't into something is when she is sleeping, and even then you have to be absolutely certain she is asleep! She has been described as a "high needs" child - very intelligent and physically more capbable then many 5 and 6 year olds. (She will be 3 on the 20th of this month).
We were praying that little brother would be a really mellow child, and although he isn't quite up to her level, he is very close. Physically he is large and strong for his age and they are starting to turn into quit the dynamic duo. She has the agility and he has the brawn and they both have the brains.
Our family doctor is greatly amused and amazed by our awesome twosome - he brings other doctors in to show off/consult with when we go in for "well baby" check-ups.
Sorry to get so long winded - spent the better part of the day trying to figure out a locking system to keep her contained in the house. I now have something in place that I hope works. Next step will be to alarm all the doors.

I get the biggest kick "watching/hearing" about you young folks raising kids. Being a parent, and grand and great grandfather I can smile big and say, "...been there, done that. Better you than me." :D :D I just have to spoil them and turn them back to the parent.

I only wish I were young - in my 20's sleep deprivation wasn't such a big deal.. but in my 40's.... ah well I have fond memories of sleep ... :)
You sound like my folks - spoil the kids and then hand them back - my dad says that the best thing about being a grandpa. :D
