View Full Version : Outlining Text?

Hi, I was just wondering how I can outline text with Element 5.0. I know there is an function in the artwork and effects section, but that is too primitive and I would like to be able to change the thickness, color, and other things. Also, I was wondering what font is used in the picture below and what thickness it is set to if you would know?

Hi Vista,
To outline text, create a blank layer above the text layer.
Then ctrl+click the text layer thumbnail. This will create the marching ants outlining your text.
Next: with your new blank layer active, edit> stroke outline and select the amount of pixels and color you wish.
After that is done, you can layer style on just the outline should you wish. It will not affect the text layer.
Not sure regarding your font request. I am not seeing it, just a piece of it for some reason.

Select the text as Michelle explained and then go >Select >Modify >Expand. I used 5 pixels. Next I feathered the selection by 2 pixels (>Select >Feather).
With the selection active, place a new layer under the text layer and fill the selection (>Edit >Fill Selection) with a color of your choice.

I have no clue as to the font on your picture.

Thats an interesting way of doing it! I have never used that method before. Gives it a different look. It almost makes it look like it is neon! Very cool. another way to consider!
Vista:
I dont think your photo posted properly. I can only see the "inter-lace design", but can tell there is text behind. can you repost it?

Hi, Guys thanks it's great because I was sick of the black outline and not being able to change it! I`m looking for the font of the text that says, "onesian.bebo.com," I posted another picture again because some of you said that the whole picture wasn't displaying.
Any ideas?

Oh, I was looking into the picture for the text!!!!:o
Boy, I know I have seen it, but not sure of the name....someone will know...if they don't answer in this thread, post a new thread called something like "font name?????" We have lots of font addicts on the forum.
If you use the stoke method for outlining your text, you do know you can change the color that way too, don't you?? Just click the box with the black in it and it brings up the color picker.

Yeah, I thought the same, but it doesn't act the same way no matter what size I put it to in PSE 5.0! I have reverted to doing a font with lines in Elements. It has worked pretty well and I'm quite happy, but it would be a million times easier if there was a font for it!

it is a Bitmap Font and there are hundreds of them and some are very very similar so to hard to tell one for the other. Here is a link, just click on bitmap fonts and you will have your choice of over 40 pages of them. Good Luck.

The type outline in the artwork & effects palette can be changed: color, thickness and opacity. It also places a drop shadow that can be changed or deleted as you wish.
After you click outline and apply, then click on asterick in layer and you can use sliders to 'see' the adjustments real-time so you don't have to go back and forth with dialog boxes. A very good way of visualizing how something is going to look.

Thank you, Clemson Jim. I had no idea that these adjustments were available. They are really easy to do and can totally change the look of the picture or letters.

Thanks Grant, but I am still unable to find the exact one. They look very similar on the web but when you download them they are quite different. I will actually ask the guy who uses that font for the name.
Thanks,
Vista

Yes the all do look the same.... my gut feeling is that windows does have one of these fonts built in for very very small text and would suspect he used the systems one as it is free. That being said i have switched to Mac and don't have the name of it in front of me. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Woooooo I would have never guessed that one, and I have it on my system. Must be that he has it set very very small.

Don't know much about fonts, but Alba Super looks a lot closer, not the same, of course...

No, it's definitely not Alba Super! What operating system are you on?!!
How do you change the spacing of characters?

asking Juergen "what are you on" .... Oh, please tell me you are talking about a computer system ......

Hi ...
You can actually make some changes to the spacing between letters ... but this one is really obscure
In Photoshop you can change the space between the letters ... but Elements doesn't have that ... well there is a sort of workaround :)
Go to Preferences ... and tick (check) Show Asian Text Options then restart Elements.
Now select the Text tool click on your image and type
look at the top of the screen and there you have a new symbol (its a curly shape)
Make sure that your text is highlighted, click on the symbol then tick Mojikumi ..
and you will be able to make some changes to the kerning by adjusting the slide.
It hasn't got the flexibility of Photoshop but it does give you some adjustability .. :)

Thanks Wendy, but I was looking to space them out more, not bunch them together which is all that function allows you to do!
Any other ideas?
Thanks,

I am on Win XP... I was talking about similarity, I know it is not it and I said so. The other thing I know is that it is not Tahoma either... :)

Wendy, I discovered Asian Text - I don't remember how - and I'm so glad I did. I use it all the time as a "go around" when I want to change kerning. That's a great hint because the Asian Text option is so useful if you want to do verticle text.

Hi Juergen,
I was just wondering how you know it is not Tahoma, as he has said it is?
I know you probably have thought of this already but did you make sure you turned the http://www.imagehosting.com/out.php/i459053_blank78.jpg off?

Vista,
I see differences in the m's, n's and especially in the b's.

Difference? I think not! Setting it to 9.5 and turning the http://www.imagehosting.com/out.php/i459053_blank78.jpg off, they are exactly the same bar the spacing. Also, with a black, 1 pix outline.

Might be worth a try if you are so set on that look.
