View Full Version : How to separate 2 colors

This is a 911 question. I have a two color patch from my daughter's school. Blue and red. I have scanned it in and want to separate the two colors, get good clean lines, then change the colors. Because of the blending when this was produced, I'm not sure how to separate the various blues and reds along the lines for a clean look. Then after I get the clean look, fill to the colors she wants (green and orange), how do I blend the sharp edges back to soften the effect. Second, try as I might, I can't figure out how to make text go around a circle. By the way, this little patch is not copyrighted and can be reproduced. Thank you for your help in advance.

You might want to post it to pixentral as I doubt you really need to separate the colours. For something like that usually Replace Color or the Color Replacement Brush works quite well - but it depends a bit on how distinct the colours are.
There are a few ways to do text in a circle but as I have Microsoft Word I do it the lazy way and do it in WordArt and copy it over. But if you don't have that then there are some threads on how to do it here that maybe someone remembers.

GRITS,
To make Type in circle,
Open New Document (CTRL+N) you will probably want same dimensions for Width and Height- Background Transparent.
Select Type Tool, click in new document- select your font, font size, font color and click the slanted T with curven double ended arrow. At Style drop down choose ARC > Horizontal >Bend 100%> OK.
Type half of message you want curved into Circle (count the total spaces in message and use half). Click the check mark to accept text.
Open another New Document, same as above and type the remaining Text with same as above directions.
Then go to Image >Rotate >180.
Then select Move Tool and drag first Text from Photo Bin onto second.
Use move tool to position and resize if necessary.

Thank you Doug and Tony for your insight.
I'm still stuggling with my problem of color separation however. The patch I scanned is a decal. It is new and has a protective film over it that is suppose to be removed and stuck to the inside of a car window. I can't remove the film or I would stick it to my scanner bed. With this film in place the scan introduced colors not on the blue and red. When I get all the extra colors out, I would also like to make cleaner lines between the red and blue.
The object of this exercise is to get a 2 inch circle that will then be decoupaged onto an Ostrich EGG that I have cut and am making into a jewelry 'box'.
I will try to upload a picture to get your opinion.
Again thank you for your help.

Grits is this anything like what you might want. If it isn't that's alright it was fun just playing around with it. I believe I saw a bee hive brush or shape some where and we all have plenty of foliage brushes. The folks on here are much better at this than me and they may have some more suggestions. If you think this might work let me know and I will continue or send you the psd file and you can change the colors. I am sure the real thing scanned would be better. I will spell Radford correct

That's a tricky one because the scan quality is leaving a lot of rough edges and noise so it makes doing a clean selection tricky. Tried cleaning it up a bit and then selecting the background color (magic wand with contiguous turned off), then adding a fill adjustment layer and filling it with green. Go back to the original layer, reselect and invert the selection and add another fill adjustment layer filled with orange.
Best I could do was this. Without a better scan (or even better finding a copy of the original patch design) it's going to be tough to do unless, like Vesta suggests, recreating it from scratch. I didn't look but is it possible that the logo is on the web somewhere or maybe the University library can get you a better copy?

I cannot say thank enough to those who have responsed to my problem. Using the instructions on making letters in a circle Douglas sent, I have changed the words Radford, Virginia to the word Alumni. Then using the color change that Tony sent I am good to go. I am good to go! Tony, since the print of this is only going to be about 1.5 inches the fact there are a few noise issues is not a problem. If someone wants to look that closely, well so be it.
Again, thank you all for your help and inspiration. You're the best!

This link will get you all the logos for Radford. There is a B/W version of the one you posted at 300 dpi and 5" X 5" that would be real easy to fix with two new colors. I was getting fuzziness like embroidery when I first played with the one you posted.
Good luck.
Post final results.
