i just found out that I cannot open RAW images from my Nikon D80. Is that right? Do I need other software?

Hello, november:

There are a large and growing number of D80 users on this forum, and Elements can open and process your RAW images quite nicely. There are a couple things you need to check, and one of them will require comments from one of those Nikonians who will surely be here shortly.

First thing to do is to make sure you have the latest version of the Adobe Camera Raw plug-in (3.7). The one that ships with Elements is relatively old, and doesn't support the D80. Here's a link to the web page that will give you the new (and free) plug-in and directions for installation:

ACR 3.7 Download (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3584)

If that doesn't do it, I believe there's an antagonistic relationship between Adobe Camera Raw and Nikon's Raw converter. That's where we need other D80 owners to weigh in here.

Hope that helps!

Chuck

p.s. Welcome to the forum!

Thanks so much Chuck! I am glad to hear I am not the only one  I tried to install camera raw 3.7 with no luck....
I just bought the Adobe Elements 4.0 (Mac) so if there is anyone who has experience with this, to open Raw, please help.
I just want to see my flower pics I took yesterday, but I will never use Raw anymore. I dont see what it does better than Jpeg (reading Ken Rockwell's article, I could recognize a lot!).

A D80 user here and I don't have any problems with RAW and although I was a sceptic originally I do rather like some of the things you can do with it. I have Windows but I assume it should be the same with a Mac. The first thing to check is that you have it installed correctly7. In the Editor look under Help>About Plug-Im and look at the list of Plug-Ins. Click on Camera Raw and check to see that you do indeed have 3.7 installed (mine is still 3.6 which works with the D80 too but 3.5 or earlier doesn't).

Thanks Tony and Chuck, guys I did it! I don't know what went wrong the first time but after reading Tony's message I gave it one more try. I might have downloaded CR 3.7 Windows instead of Mac, I don't know but it works now :) !
I'm sooooooo happy. Now I've got to learn more about editing Raw. Great to be here, by the way!

I was not initially keen on RAW images either, due to the increased size and increased post required.

Recently I've begun playing with RAW files a little more. I'm optimitistic about the 'second chance' nature of RAW particularly as it relates to white balance. I've been shooting a large/fine JPEG and a RAW file on important shots (provided card capacity isn't an issue). On those (many) occassions when I really blow the shot I have a better chance of salvaging the RAW file than the JPEG.

Now that you've got the converter working properly you may find a place for RAW in some situations.

Thanks Donn, yeah you might be right. Now I have it and 'can handle it', why not try and use it? By the way, with the NikonD80 it is possible to record two images one RAW/JPEG.
I have to dig into this, could be a challenge....
