Thank you, Charlotte,

I don't know if you can tell from the resolution of the posted picture, the man is holding his daughter (I think daughter) in his lap to bath her.

These are old, scanned slides. I was in Viet Nam; it's normally a 1-year tour. After 6-months you get to leave for 5 days to go somewhere for R&R (rest & relaxation). There were a number of destination choices - I picked Bangkok.

What a great idea for a thread! And, excellent pictures, Jean & Rusty! I'd love to visit southeast Asia but probably will never have the chance. Rusty, I've read about the floating markets and you've brought it to life for me. Thanks to both of you for sharing your pictures...

Rusty - did you happen to see an old toothless woman with a hibachi burning in her boat there? She was selling fried bananas and they were sooooo delicious.Actually one of the best things I have ever tasted!! We were nervous about the fire on her wooden boat, but I suspect she has been doing that for years. Bangkok is a fascinating place that I would love to visit again!

This is a 13th Century statue, solid gold, 5-1/2 tons! It was covered with plaster during Burmese invasions to protect it from looters. Then everybody forgot about it - for centuries. It was rediscovered in the 1950s when some klutz struck against it and chipped off a big hunk of plaster.

I recently found this slide to scan, taken quite a few years ago. I'm posting it here in hopes someone can answer a following question.
It was taken aboard a train (imagine that!) at Kyle of Lochalsh Scotland, where we were ready to head back to Inverness. In the background they were constructing the bridge to the Isle of Skye. There was great controversy at the time that the bridge (as opposed to the ferry) would open up the Isle to development and change the pace of the island. My question then for anyone familiar with this area; has this happened, or can I get rid of the bumper sticker I bought that says "Isle of Skye, No Toll Bridge?"

http://www.pixentral.com/hosted/1ykGNJ41KbMHghfXjX8H2NqMMzf6XS0_thumb.jpg (http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1ykGNJ41KbMHghfXjX8H2NqMMzf6XS0)

It looks like we were drinking lemonade and eating Cadbury bars. Must have been before the beer cart went down the aisle!

TonyW
April 6th, 2007, 09:29 AM
Steven: They did indeed finish it:

http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/skye/bridge/index.html

But you can scrap the bumper sticker - there's a bridge but tolls I believe were scrapped in 2005 - so the protesters got their way in the end.

That being said it's been a long while since I've been there too and there was only talk of a bridge back then - so must have been before you!

Bad choice of words on my part Gary. If I look hard enough I can probably find the Cadbury bar wrappers. I must of stashed them somewhere! Hard to believe my brother is a minimalist when it comes to "stuff." We share the same set of parents.

Here's one more, from our last trip to the UK. It is the tram line in Blackpool. I was curious where it went, so I convinced my wife to ride it to the end. It lumbered on, fairly slowly, for what seemed a long time. I soon thought we were beyond a walk back to our B+B. When it finally got to the end they made us get off, and walk about 100 feet away to get back on for the trip back! Oh yeah, it was snowing, and it was May. Pretty cold wind across the Irish Sea.

Steven: And I bet the locals were eating ice-cream - I wish I could find the picture I have somewhere of a cold March day on the sea-front in Brighton on the south coast of England. Cold, howling wind, a few flurries but the ice-cream van was parked right in the worst of it and amazingly had customers :). Tough people the British :D

Best I could do is find this one - same time, same place, same weather and some hardy souls out walking on the beach.

Steven - I do indeed - from a beautiful day in November 2004. First three on the Palace Pier and the last one a shot of the West Pier which got wiped out by a storm and then by fire in 2002/2003 although I don't think it has been open since the early 70's - but as a kid I think it was my favorite - it had those Victorian era machines where you could watch naked women for a penny - well that was the theory - I don't think the product was as good as the promotion ....

Tony- Thanks for the photos of Brighton Pier. You were there on a nice day, and I especially liked the one of the old West Pier. Funny how weather and fire led to it's demise; did it escape the war OK, or was it constructed after?
I just remember walking through one form of amusement after another to reach the end of the existing Pier. Any recommendations for the next trip of similar visual feasts?

Wendy: that does look like an ice-cream day in Scotland. Here's an ice-cream day from Wales also from last year. Castlerigg stone circle in North Wales - which was built around 2000 BC. Unusually not a cloud in the sky - could probably use some as it would add some drama to what is a rather mystical place (and there were a few people doing mystical things there at the time :) )

Found this one the other day. It was three days earlier that my wife and I got married in Vegas, and now we were at the Grand Canyon. I suggested a hike down into the canyon (about 8 miles down, and then 8 miles up.) It was on the uphill leg I shot this picture. I think she was almost in tears, and possibly thinking of annulment. I gave her my shirt to cover her head, and her skin (normally white from her Scottish blood) was covered in dust. It wasn't funny then but we get a good laugh at it now.:)
