Hello -

When I download photos from my camera to my hard drive, the "portrait" orientation always appears sideways (when viewed with Win XP) as you would expect. When they are viewed in Elements, however, they appear in the correct orientation (vertically with the sky up).

How does Elements know to rotate these photos?

Thanks for answering what must be a very simple question.

There is EXIF data that gets saved with the image that Elements can interpret. If you open the image in Elements and then go to File..File Info.. you can see all of this information here. When I open one that was taken with the camera rotated the photo says Orientation: Right Top in Elements and it rotates it to the right so that it has the correct orientation on the screen. Hope this helps!

It may be worth noting that not all cameras have an orientation sensor.
