I have a large collection of stamps that I have purchased over the years for paper scrapbooking and was curious how I could transform them into digital images? Is that 'allowed" (or leagal)? Could I stamp them on white paper in black ink, then scan them in, open it in editor, then select it and make it a brush? What about other images or stickers that I have in my paper collection... can I scan them and use them in PSE5? If so How would one do it?
One last question.. what about the look of chalking? has anyone achieved those results with PSE?
Thanks for your help. Obviously I am new to this. I have been lurking for weeks, but finally took the plunge and decided to start asking questions.

Welcome to the forum.
I am certainly NOT a legal expert , however...
as an old crafter of most crafts around, I have a large collection of "stuff" and some of my stuff has more stuff.
.
Yes I have done stamps the way you described.
Other images (stickers etc) scan, select the area you wish to keep,(ctrl +j) then delete the original layer so you have the background transparent around it. Then save as a .png file.
I've done the same thing with some other embellishments, ribbon and even jewerly.
I'm sure others may disagree with me, but, if I bought it, and I'm using it for me, I'm OK with that.
I would not give away or sell other peoples creations.
But that's me, and I am always good for buying more.:D

Hi ..
... and welcome to the forum :)
I'm pretty sure that you are not supposed to do that ... but if you are just doing it for yourself then I don't suppose that anyone will know :) :)

Hi,
I'm new to the forum and have just been poking around when I saw this thread.
I can tell you as a rubberstamper for years, there are strict "rules" about doing anything other than handstamping an image. Most stamp companies forbid any kind of electonic use of their images.
Now, having said that, if you are using the electronic stamps for personal use...that means not selling, sharing, or posting lo's with those images, who's gonna know.
My advice...do what you want but keep those lo's to yourself that way the stamp police won't get you.
Oh...almost forgot...each rubber stamp company has "angel policies". You can look up the companies for the stamps you want to turn into electronic files and see what their particular rules are. If you don't see the angel policy, contact them and ask them what it is.

The technical side of this
I would stamp in black ink - scan at highest resolution
then open with Photoshop and select the white space and delete it
then save as png
then save as brush
If you don't turn it into a transparent item, when you use your brush - you will have a square with the stamp in the center.
