View Full Version : How to enter different cameras in Downloader menu?

Hi,
Can someone please tell me how to enter different cameras on the Downloader menu. I use 2 different cameras with different memory cards. I tried to import images from my less frequently used camera and Photoshop only imported a third of them because the others "already existed". It does not recognize the different cameras so it continues to assign the same numbers already in the system. I went to the Help section which tells you to go to the Organizer, select Preferences in Edit and from the "Camera" pull down menu select the cameras you use. All that menu says is "Adobe Photoshop Elements". When I import images I simply select "camera or card reader". It never identified my cameras. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this frustrating problem.

One very inexpensive solution is to use a card reader. I'm using one from CompUSA that cost less than fifteen bucks. Now the downloader is not "reading" a camera, it is looking at, in my case, "Mass Storage Device Drive:\F)
Rather than having to buy two card readers, you may be able to spend a few dollars more and get one that will take more than one size of memory card. I wasn't concerned with that because both of my cameras use SD cards.

Just following on from Chuck's post.....
The Organiser will allow images with the same Filename provided they are in different folders.
The Adobe Downloader will allow you to choose a Folder into which the images will be downloaded and you can also renamed them on the way. So for example you could have one folder name for Olympus and another for Nikon - or whatever.
Either way the advice about using a card reader rather than a direct connection is to be recommended.

Colin, thanks for straightening me out on that. I'm going to remove my erroneous post so I don't confuse anyone else (beside myself).
However, it sounds like the OP would have to tweak the folder destination each time he/she switched cameras to avoid the duplicate number issue. Unless, of course, OP followed your and Rusty's advice to use a card reader and set up files from which to import into Organizer. Is that correct?
Incidentally, Downloader Pro will attach camera model and/or serial number to either folder name or image number for those who need that functionality.

Hi Chuck - your up early :-)
Downloader Pro sounds like a good program, I may take a look at it. Do you use it in conjunction with Photoshop?

Chuck: Duplicate file numbers aren't a problem - Elements is smart enough to figure it out. In fact I have downloaded images with the same number from the same camera on the same card but taken at different times and Organizer recognized them as being different so I suspect something else is going on here.
Oops I see Colin has said the same thing. I do have the downloader set so it creates a subfolder with the download date but, as I recall even duplicate file numbers from the same camera taken on the same date were recognized as being different and Elements created a new folder for them. That happened until I figured out that my new camera could be set so it didn't revert to 0001 every time I deleted the images on the card :) . But I do use a card reader and don't download directly from the camera.

Hi, Colin: Yes, still dark here!
I've used Downloader and its companion, BreezeBrowser, since the beginning of 'digital time' for me, i.e., 2002. I don't use BreezeBrowser as much anymore, as the browsing features of early Elements, CS2, and now Lightroom provide a more direct link into photo editing. I still use Downloader, though. Here's a link to the BreezeSys website section on the program:

Good morning, Tony: Yes, looks like I was chasing a will-o-the-wisp with OP's importing problem. I'm surprised, though, to hear that you can have two images of the same number on the same card simultaneously - unless the camera software creates multiple folders on the card, which my Canons seem to do at times for whatever reason.
If you were to try to import two images of the same name into a folder in Windows Explorer, you'd likely get a message saying the file already exists and do you wish to overwrite.
I also turned off the reset feature on the file number; however, with multiple Canon cameras all using the same numbering system, I do get duplicate numbers. It would be nice to have a way to set a unique digit for each camera so there'd be no question of the numbers being different. That's what Downloader Pro does, but it would be more convenient to do in camera.

Chuck - they weren't on the same card at the same time with the same number - I think that would give a problem and I doubt the camera would let you do it. First day I had the camera I shot a few pics, downloaded them, deleted them from the card and then took some more. The second batch had the same numbers as the first but Organizer recognized them as being taken at different times on the same day.
