THIS IS A FIRE RAINBOW - THE RAREST OF ALL NATURALLY OCCURING ATMOSPHERIC PHENOMENA.
THE PICTURE WAS CAPTURED ON THE IDAHO/WASHINGTON BORDER.
THE EVENT LASTED ABOUT 1 HOUR
CLOUDS HAVE TO BE CIRRUS, AT LEAST 20K FEET IN THE AIR, WITH JUST THE
RIGHT AMOUNT OF ICE CRYSTALS AND THE SUN HAS TO HIT THE CLOUDS AT PRECISELY 58 DEGREES.

Nope, I didn't take the photo. It was sent to me from the retired firefighters group that I below to. Actually, that's where I get all the jokes I post on the joke thread.

I'm turning into such an internet sceptic that I had to check out Snopes.com to see if this was a hoax! Happy to say, Snopes confirms the picture is real...

I had to pull up in the breakdown lane of a busy highway (and was amazed that I had my camera) when I saw this rainbow that was vertical-I think it's called a dog's rainbow or something like that...

Actually, once you are "into" Photoshop - every photo is suspect. Now that I see what people can accomplish with this software - I'm looking at all photos from a different perspective.
I fell for the "fish from the Tsunami" pictures - now I no longer trust anything I see on the internet.
But I digress - what I really wanted to say -
what an amazing photo.

Once I get my new camera, I am going to keep my old digital in the car. There have been many opportunities where I've said "wish I had my camera."

Thanks to everyone for the kind words.
I'm glad you enjoyed the picture and I'm glad that it wasn't another Internet hoax. I didn't think of that when I posted it.

While the photo is genuine and not a manipulated image, there's more to it than mentioned in the brief note. Nature is truly amazing  (not to detract from the amazing technical feats it takes to create digital images in computer graphics programs), but they are in different categories entirely. However, "rare" is a relative term, and with natural phenomena, as in business, it's all about location, location, location.
For more detailed and accurate info about what the image depicts visit http://www.hoax-slayer.com/fire-rainbow.shtml the commentary gives you the behind the scenes science to these beautiful displays.
So if you enjoyed this particular photo:), you can take a look at more images of this phenomenon, visit http://www.atoptics.co.uk/halo/chaim0.htm (http://www.atoptics.co.uk/halo/chaim0.htm:cool:)
Enjoy. (My biggest complaint about life is that no one gets out of it alive.;))

Carol, Your picture is called a sun dog. They are usually on each side of the sun. Also from ice crystals and needs quite cold temps. We see them a lot this time of year in Wisconsin. Saw a really strong one the other day, but was on an exit ramp and couldn't find an angle to repeat it after I got off.
