Photo Assignments ? ..Definietly not 'competition ' style and no prizes...just get out and shoot the things that are on an assignment list. Would this be something anyone else would be interested in ? Of course we'd have to post our images in the gallery after a certain deadline. I need inspiration...someone needs to push me into it.

OK Mary...I needed that !
But I think we should wait t'il Wendy gets back before we get started...she'll be back on the 15th.
Meanwhile.....who would like to step forward and come up with the list for the Photo Assignment ? We will need to decide how many items will be on the list and it should be limited to only '1' photo per 'thing' to photograph...whatever that thing may be...this will be up to this person who wants to step forward and write up a list. Should be simple enough...like ' something old' ....'something wet '...oh but please be more creative than my pathetic attempt at suggestions...
kerriann85
August 10th, 2005, 09:44 PM

My kids have eye spy books. If you aren't familiar with them they are fabulous. There is a riddle at the bottom of the book and then you search through the page for the objects. They are all photographs with tons and tons of stuff on the one page making it very difficult to find.
Here's one of the pages "I spy a turtle, four ladders, and SAND (means it spells the word), Three baseball gloves, and a picture of land: Four birdies of blue (in this case badminton birdies but of course in our session it could be blue jays), nine bowling pins, A balloon, a mask and two swim fins. " This was from I Spy Gold Challenger but they have other books too. Anyway just a thought.
Oh and did I say.......count me in!! I haven't had the camera going in ages. You people are taking over my life!!

Sherry, love the pix of the sax player! You may have mentioned this before, but what camera and lenses do you shoot with?
I am/was supposed to shoot a local jazz group at a park tonight but it's been raining all day and still threatening so I'm betting the concert is canceled.
What do you do with the pix you take? Are you commissioned by the groups? Do you sell them somehow?
(If cuiosity had killed the cat, I'd have been dead long ago!) :)

Meow!!
I have a Pentax *st DS (Digital SLR) got it in Feb. I have my old film lens a Tamron 75-300 & a Pentax regular size lens (I have forgotten the size).
I don't sell the pics cause you have to get the artist's permission (release) to do that. I make 8x10's and at the next show I see them at, I get them autographed--also I give the artist a copy. Our walls are covered with autographed photos. I have become good friends with Peter White (the guitarist) because of my photos. A lot of artists post them on their websites. Also there is a magazine called Smooth Jazz News that uses my photos, I've had 2 covers & bunches of misc shots. This month has one in it. Might be able to see it at: WWW.smoothjazznews.com
I will be seeing Richard Elliott (the sax player) again this Sunday!

Sounds like an excellent idea - I participate in a local one where a topic is posted once a month however the topics are a bit too regional to work for this international group. For example we always have something to do with snow in January which would be tough for many of you further South

Well I'm really needing some motivation to shoot. About all I have coming up is a photo shoot of 4 children all to be in the same picture -- that'll be a challenge but there is a set of twins to be in the picture too.
Something that might work would be a building 3 or more stories high, old barns, solitary tree shots, a child's toy, bicycle shot, and more I'm sure that other folks will be able to add to this list.

Here's A Lengthy List (http://www.photosapien.com/post-4859.html#4859) I ran into on another forum. You could always pick three and run a poll to choose the next assignment. That way anyone who wants to can have some input.

Tony, while eveyrone couldn't post snow in January like we could, we could have a "winter" shot from all over the country. It would be interesting to see what other people's weather is like in the months of Jan/Feb, and by then we would be sick of snow and could curse those people sitting in the sun!!
My cousin moved from Ontario Canada to Arizona quite a few years back. She loves it there and doesn't miss the snow, but what she does miss is FALL and the beautiful changing leaves. So again, a fall theme might be nice for us to share our gorgeous colours. The possibilities are endless.

Jodi Frye
August 13th, 2005, 11:00 AM
Sounds good...10 with a time limit...2-3 weeks ? 1month ? 1 day
GaryK
August 13th, 2005, 11:10 AM
I think a couple of weeks is good. I could be a little difficult for the next few weeks with people being away or going away on vacation.
We could post them all as a collage (thats just me needing collaging practice)
even if its sort of a contact sheet type thing.
So it would only be one picture in total for either posting in our gallery or at pixentral for non subscribers.
Gary.
Jodi Frye
August 13th, 2005, 11:17 AM
yup I guess we'll have to wait for feedback from others on this. 2 weeks can go by really fast for some people. Yes pixentral is a good idea since I'm sure most of us don't want to use our gallery space up for this ;) We could start a new thread for every assignment category and then everyone could just post there pics in that thread for that category. Make sense ?
Ya think that got Dave angry enough ??
GaryK
August 13th, 2005, 11:26 AM
Ya two weeks does go by fast. I bet though, that people either get it done the first few days, or wait fot the last few days , no matter how much time you have
Gary.
kerriann85
August 13th, 2005, 11:45 AM
I was thinking about the "contact sheet" idea too. I think that would be cool to have the person make one page of blocks of pictures maybe all in the specific order the original list was posted. Only posted if you get all the pix or when you quit looking? Two weeks sounds pretty good to me. Only newly taken pix. Posted on pixentral with options to add to gallery. It can work just like the way we did the tutorials, First post in thread has the list and deadline, then each person just adds their post and a link. Right? Would be try to keep only the link posts in that specific thread and have a separate one for comments?
We should have all this figured out about the time Wendy gets back. :)
Between this project and the "chain picture" we won't have time to work on any Challenges, should they show up agian. :D

Oh, Kerri, when you find a job that allows you to take summer's off ( kids wont be in school then )...you just let me know of such a place ;) ...or do you have one of those freebie built in babysitters ?? I'm not so priviledged. In these parts it doesn't pay to get a job and put your kids in daycare....I'd be working just to pay for daycare !!
Pauline
August 13th, 2005, 04:27 PM
Jodi as a stay at home Mom, I know the pay isn't that great, but the rewards will be that you are raising your children yourself. I thought having teens, I wouldn't be needed at home, but when your kids are teens you will find you are needed even more (to keep an eye on things!!) So.......you don't need to pay for a babysitter, you just need to have lots of spys. Every stage has it's challenges.
kerriann85
August 13th, 2005, 04:32 PM
Actually Jodi, the answer to that is again doing foodservice at the U. I'd get the same vacation days as hubby and summers off (specifically told to apply for unemployment) Only problem comes around spring break cause those breaks don't match the public schools. :(
I would only consider going back if I could return to something like the convenience store I did for a couple years in a dorm. NOT the dining room stuff. And luckily the 10 year old could actually supervise the 6 year old for a couple hours as needed.
Much rather do photo retouching. Anybody wanna write me a nice convincing application letter?

1) A tree at your house
2) an architecture within ten miles of your home
3) something from your home (anything)
4) a favorite place of yours
5) 1 person (known to you or not)
Anyway, you get the idea. Each can be left open to many interpetations (sp) also we could see something of what everyone's home/locale look like.

Jodi: Building on something someone already indicated. Let's consider doing 9 photos -- assemble them like the Warhol Effect tut and then display the work in our gallery.
Sounds as though we are getting this one ready to go -- I have enough batteries charged up to handle a reasonable assignment.
I like the Hat picking idea that way we get some randomness in the selection and can do them in the order the come out of the hat.... 8)

I think it would be fun to start with our self portrait and go from there. The Warhol effect seems like the way to go. That way it keeps it all together in one picture. If we wanted it larger so that people could scroll through the pictures and see them better we could always go the pixentral route and make it a larger size picture.

I've given this idea some more thought and while the list 10 items is efficient, I wonder if it doesn't detract from the idea of assignments.
I'd like to propose one topic per week. This gives us focus on the one picture we need to work on and gives us the chance to shoot multiple pictures to determine which one really meets the assignment.
What do you think about this approach?
jazzfisher
August 19th, 2005, 07:23 PM
Sounds reasonable to me. But if we do 10 that gets some of you guys into snow doesn't it?
I rather like the idea that we have a thread for each "idea" & post 1 (or possible multi) pics to Pixtral so we can really see them instead of all on a multi-photo sheet.
willpresley
August 19th, 2005, 07:45 PM
It will take us into the middle of November -- snow could be flying that early but generally where I live it gets more likely in Jan Feb and into Mar. So it will take us through the fall season which might be good for some of the photos.
Jodi talked about the posting - sounds like they'll be individual posts not a conglomeration of pictures; each photographer needs their own credits.

Sherry,
That would be similar to the "Photo" Challenge that used to be on Grant's site ....... each challenge ran for a week and you could post as many of your interpretations as you liked. It was really neat to see all the different "takes" on the challenge.
It was great for a beginner like me who is too chicken  to try the "big" challenge. I think this idea will be fun and a great practice experience ...... will help to get me out of the "rut" I find myself in.

I'm thinking again... I'd like to kind of mention that i was really hoping for it to be a '1' shot per assignment sort of deal...more like choosing a 'best shot' .... 1 per person per category. I'd kind of like to stay away from the 'multiples'. How many are ready to shoot me now ?

Jodi,
I wanted to speak up about that, too, but was a little shy about going against the current. I prefer one shot per person. I feel like looking at multiple entries for each person would become a bit tedious, whereas seeing each person's BEST would be great. I guess that's why I was a little interested in the "grid" idea -- although I see advantages to larger, one-page photos, as long as there's only one entry per person.
Thanks for speaking up. I vote your way!

Aaah Wendy, that was my question exactly. This is for photographs.. not creations right?
So we can edit a little but not change into something else---is this correct?
willpresley
August 20th, 2005, 06:45 AM
Yes, I think the guidelines will be one photograph per person. You can shoot as many as you want but can only submit one. Since it is a photo shoot it should remain as a photograph which may need some photoshopping to make it a better photograph.
The reason I suggested one per week is it will give us time to savor the work of other participants. Rather than have photographs of different subjects to look at throughout the time limit. Since each assignment will be a new thread we will be able to also discuss it before going on to the next assignment.

We should remember that this is not so much a contest as a means for each of us to use our camera(s) to meet a target goal each week. 5C that is chilly! The reason we haven't started yet is there are people waiting for school to start so they'll be able to participate.
Just remember -- photography is the capture of light so think about how the light plays on your subject. And capture the best light possible.

Hey, I'm so happy you aren't wanting to shoot me ! :D
Yup...what Will said...photoshop only to 'crop' and fix color etc..if necessary. WE can always do another 'fun' challenge at some point where we can 'enhance' our photos any way we wish...life is ours !
I really want ot mention that this is all in fun. No pressure. Nothing to lose....take your sights beyond the camera ! ...the camera is just a tool to capture your own visions...nobady else's !

Lest we forgeet -- the photo assignments start on the 4th of September. I'll post an assignment on Sunday and we'll have until Saturday to settle on the one photo that we want to submit to meet the assignment. Having a week to work on each photo assignment should accommodate everyone's schedules and also give us time to plan or otherwise make arrangements to do the photo, or give us multiple opportunities to shoot the same shot in different lighting situations.
I think we'll focus on outdoors shots to begin because the light won't be very accommodating towards the end of October and into November.

OK let's try it this way:
The assignment is posted on Sunday (I'm up very early) but Sunday doesn't count as one of the days to do the photos -- it'll run from Monday through Sunday -- that will give us time to plan and also should give us enough time to work the assignment given other events of life that must be enjoyed or experienced.
There will be 2 Sundays that I won't be near my computer (yikes! Withdrawals -- but well worth it as I am visiting my grandchildren -- and yeah some pictures will come from that) -- So I'll have someone post the assignments and give them out via PM so that everyone gets them at the same time ?

Jodi Frye
August 31st, 2005, 12:47 PM
Eva, after you download and open the image look at the layers palette and scroll to the very top....then just click on the 'create new layer' icon at the top of layers palette. This is your layer. Add what you want to it and if you need to make more layers you can but in the end you'll have to merge your work into one single layer(rename your layer with your name) You can drag your layer to any position in the palette as well...so if you wanted your image to be slightly below someone else's layer just grab it in the palette and move/drag it down...position as you wish. It's quite simple once you get the hang of it.

I have ideas but still have to work on the basics beyond cropping and resizing. The last time I tried working with layers, messages kept popping up saying no pixels had been chosen. I was lost so I took a break. I'll get it yet.
And thanks for your support.

Eva,
I get that message all the time too. :!: My problem is I just keep trying stuff til it works but then I never know what I finally did right. But I'm learning...thanks to the people here.
I don't learn things well from reading (like recipes or directions that come with something) I'm more visual & it helps when the forum can tell you stuff you need to know. :D
Pauline
August 31st, 2005, 06:04 PM
Eva if you are getting that message you are working on the wrong layer. Probably you are trying to select something on a new blank layer. I've done that plenty of times myself. It will come and when it does you will wonder why you found it so difficult. The big thing to keep an eye on is what layer you are on, and ALWAY name them!! Try and do EVERYTHING on a separate layer!! I would sometimes do stuff on a layer and it was the wrong one and then I couldn't find it, or I would try and do a filter and it wouldn't select everything I wanted because I had messed around with that layer. I'm getting there slowly...............

OK -- I've reviewed the entire thread and making one last post before setting up the Assignments on Sep 4. I have decided to post assignments on Sunday or earlier when necessary -- the actual assignment time runs from Monday through Sunday, giving us one week of opportunity -- this allows us to capitalize on morning mid-day, and evening shots to support our quest for the one photo we will post.
Posting Rules:
Only 1 picture that can have adjustments in PSE for improving the picture but the original picture must be maintained.
We will have two threads to conduct business: The assignment thread will list the assignment and links only. This means we must be diligent in posting our comments in the associated thread which will be number related.
Since we have to consider the southern hemisphere we won't be doing any season specific shots -- however they may fit into a category.
We should remember that this is not so much a contest as a means for each of us to use our camera(s) to meet a target goal each week.
To launch this project I'll be posting 3 weeks of assignments with the date due in the title -- This accommodates folks with September specific needs.
So watch for the new threads tomorrow September 4th.
