I've been unable to apply the drop shadow to the adjustment layer in the last section with the girl. I was also unable to do it in the previous section with the numbers. What am I doing wrong. Im using PSE 4. Thanks

Me too, I am unable to apply a drop shadow.
Aliscraps, did any one ever get back to you on this?
I have struggled with this and still cannot figure it out.
Can someone help with this?
Thanks,

When you control-click on the shape layer in the palette bin...then you toss that in the trash (drag to the trash can icon above the palette) leaving only the selection showing on your photo. Then click on the layer adjustment icon above the palette. Click levels...ok. Then try to apply the drop shadow. Hopefully that will do it. I took the course a while ago, and my notes are a bit fuzzy. I think this is how it was done.

Any other suggestions, I still cannot apply the drop shadow to the text effect.
I am beginning to think that this lesson 16 demonstration (the drop shadow with an adjustment layer) only works in PSE5.

maryb,
I haven't done this course yet but I would think that it would have been said at some stage if it was a 5 only feature. I don't see any mention of versions on the detail page of the course.
You might not like this idea but one of the things I do sometimes when I get stuck is to start over on a particular project. Start with a blank canvas and see if you get any further. Might be worth a try!
Sorry I can't offer any other help.

It isn't a PSE5 only thing cos I've just done it in PSE3!
I thought maybe a screenshot would help, showing my layers:

1. Open your picture.
2. Select a custom shape and drag it out over the image
3. With the shape layer selected load the selection (Ctrl/Cmd-Click on the thumbnail)
4. Throw that layer into the trashcan. You're left with just one layer & the marching ants should still be showing on your original background layer.
5. Open a Levels adjustment layer, move the sliders click OK.
6. Apply your drop shadow.

Dear Bayla, Jojo99 and GraceT,
Got it, finally with all your help.
Hope some day I can return the favor.
Trying to learn all this, fun, but at times frustrating.

Mary,
Glad you managed it. And thanks are due to you...you made me go back and practise it a few times, trying to work out how NOT to be able to do the drop shadow. I can now do the whole technique in my sleep!

Funny, glad that I could be of service. I too do PSE techniques in my sleep, now if I only could do it for real and retain what I practice.
I certainly have enjoyed the Creative Techniques lessons. I don't have PSE5, but the lessons are so worth the price.
I don't write much in the forum, but I love reading your input and those who are such great contributors. Certainly have learned a lot just here in the forum.
Thank you again, Bayla
