brush problem they don't paint?? such a sad question

I am having trouble with actually using the brushes. I have the foreground colour on. I select a brush but it only selects an area and doesn't paint. What am I doing wrong?

bclady: it sounds like you're choosing the selection brush instead of the regular paintbrush. The one you want is in the second group of tools from the bottom of the tool box, just above the paint bucket and below the eraser (at least in PSE 5 Windows version)

Truth be told.....I knew what the problem was because I've done it myself....and more than once!
