Tami, you did it again :) another informative tutorial. Thanks very much!
I followed your first tutorial closely and it went very well. I followed your second tutorial closely and it too went just like you did it. I noticed in the first video you did that after we entered the still images and then hit “enter” each of the images were rendered to a folder on the hard drive. These images looked like mini video clips but they weren’t together. They were just rendered by themselves. This took some time obviously. In the second video we skipped the “entering” part and went straight to the burning a DVD section. This also took some time to do since it appeared the rendering process was started all over again.
My question is why hit “enter” after getting your images on the timeline to be rendered is they are only going to be rendered a second time when you create the Dvd.? Why not just go straight to the burn Dvd and do it from there if it has to be rendered in order for the Dvd to be written too?

:D
I rendered it in the first video so everyone could see what it looked like as a finished product as well as it needs to be rendered before it can export.
Plus if you have composite effects, you won't see them smoothly untill after they are rendered. Now that didn't have any composite effects but old habits die hard  If for some reason you had a keyframe out of place you wouldn't know it till it was rendered.
The processing on the DVD is not actually rendering it's conversion to MPEG 2 which is the format for DVD's.
Hope that answers your questions :)

Thanks, Tami, that answers my question. I never thought of rendering the slide show first to see if there's any keyframes out of place. Thanks for the tip within a tip ;)
Is there a way of changing the Dvd menu's to your liking. PE only allows just so many different menu's to choose from so I'd like to be able to decide how many different scene selections I want and not be stuck with the usual 3 or 4 offered in the program. It would be nice if Adobe offered up some type of upgrade for PE and hopefully this would be one of the added features. That is, more menu's to select from.

August 15th, 2005, 05:24 PM
You're Welcome :D
Currently all you can change are the text fields on the DVD menus.
I know alot of people would like Menus they can edit, as well as a larger selection so maybe Adobe will listen at some point:)

Hi! I have a comment about burning a DVD. A while ago, I worked on a project that ended up being about 40 min long after editing. When I went to burn the DVD, it would stop after a while & say "Encoding error". I tried several different times. Then I found out what was wrong...finally...
If your computer has a screen saver that comes on after a certain period of time, disable it. What was happening was that my screensaver was coming on in the middle of the burning & disrupting it.
I just wanted everyone to know this, since it took me weeks to figure it out & I thought it was a problem with my burner!
If it is a short DVD like Beagley, the screen saver probably wouldnt come on during the burning process.

Thank you so much for your tutorials. I've been so frustrated trying to figure out this program that I had just about given up. I am trying to recreate a slide show I had made in power point. I went into Premiere Elements, chose slide show and imported the pictures, but there are over 100 pictures so it was impossible to try and move them into the correct order on that time line. So I went back to Photoshop, tagged them all, put them in the right order and then imported them into elements from the tag. Added music and burned to DVD. Unfortunatley the pictures were all pixelated and didn't look very good. What did I do wrong?
Thanks

Hi GG,
What size are your photos? Did you do any resizing?
Also did you import the original photos into PRE or the images that were in Power Point?
Let me know and we'll see if we can get your problem solved :)

You know I've done so much with these photos trying to get them right that I'm not really sure where I'm at. I downloaded most of them from the internet originally. They look great in Powerpoint. In Elements, I first put them in photoshop to organize them and then pulled them from there into premiere because I didn't know how else to get them in order. After they came out all pixelated, I went on line to do some research and started reading about making them certain sizes for DVD so then I did start messing with the sizes. But no, I did not try to take them out of PPT. Now that you've shown me a few things I'm going to try and go back to the original pictures and start all over and see if I can get it right.
Thanks for trying to help me. Let me try this first and then I'll see how it looks. Your training is great and your beagle is so beautiful!
Thanks

First,
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!! I have spent so many frustrating hours trying to figure out what you taught in just a few minutes. I made a show, put in sound, titles, transitions and wrote it to a DVD and it came out great! My question now is how do I save your training so I can watch it again at a later date? I tried right clicking and doing save as, but that only saves the .html. I need to actually save the pdp file?
Thanks again,

I was able to save your tutorial the same way I save the regular tutorials.
Let the movie play to the end - go to Internet Explorer | Tools | Internet Options | Temporary Internet Files | Settings | View Files | scroll down the list until you find the .mov file you just watched[/u] then Right click on the file name | select copy | then find a place in your folder structure where you would like the file to reside | then right click on or in that folder and | select paste.
Hope that helps :)

The premiere videos are listed within the forum -- you'll find them by watching the sticky notes -- and the first post has the link to the video file. So far I have captured all 3 to hard disk by using Quicktime Pro. But follow Mary's guidance if you just have the player version of QT.

Thanks for another great tutorial. I was going to include a question about why does captured video go both to the timeline and the media panel. I really like placing the video segments myself in the timeline. But I thought I would do something different for a guy and look in the book and there it was the more button on the capture page, amazing what you can find out by reading. Rog

Dee Dee Warren,
Proceed with caution with those videos in the Learning Center. They are very good BUT they were done Premiere Elements 1.0, not the 2.0 version.
As I have said in previous posts, similarities YES, the same NO.
Titles
Example: Saving a Title. Do not try to find a save title button at the bottom of the Text Styles panel in 2.0. It is not there. In 2.0, the titles are embedded in the project. This is the Thread to check out for this:
http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9937
DVD Menus (automatically set scene buttons when doing slideshows)
Check out this Thread for that:
http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9132
Those are two examples where I spent a lot of time trying to figure how why something was not working in 2.0 as shown in the videos in the Premiere Elements videos in the Learning Center.

Bayla,
Good question.
With all the multitasking that goes on in the business world, I assume that they have just not gotten around to updates and are depending on the similarities between 1.0 and 2.0, and not those annoying little details that are not the same for both. The latter seems to be left to Forum User Help.

I'm way late to this party... I just had a comment that I believe the "Fit contents to DVD" option will compress your data as necessary to reduce it to 4.7GB, but I do not believe it will expand it to fill the disk as you said on the tutorial if it happens to be < 4.7 GB when rendered at 8 mbit/s. If you go beyond that and have an audio track, then you might go over most DVD players' ability to playback since they typically require an average of 9.8 mbits/s, and the audio track may be 1.5 mbit/s.
My slideshow, btw, was created in PSE 5.0, and I'm using PE 3.0 to render the DVD to a folder using a 1280x960 WMV source. My computers are older and my desktop does not have the CPU extensions necessary to run PE, hence the slideshow on one PC and DVD rendering on the other. With the 8 MBbit/s streams though I am disappointed at how it has rendered the DVD. It looks OK on a TV, but I still thought it would look better, like a commercial DVD. It just looks like clean VHS tape to me. I presume it is the single pass rendering engine in PE 3.0. I still plan to explore ways to get this to 16:9 high def, but I spent so much time on it already. Perhaps that will be easier with PSE 6.0 and PE 4.0?

Thanks for the great tutorials. Quick question on keyframes. I noticed that my own video transitions (different versions of zoom and pan) loose the original key frame locations in the panel when I insert a d transition from one clip to another, in this case a photo from PSE. I have to adjust the key frame to the beginning and end of the clip. I wonder if there is a way to "lock" the keyframes onto the clip before transition so they won't move. The transition I use mostly is "disolve".
Thanks in advance.
PS.. PSE 5.0 and PE 3.0 should be arriving today. Can't wait.

Hi Tami;
I think it's fitting that my first participation on this forum is to say a sincere thanks, not only to you, but to everyone who is helping new users like me. I just bought the PSE 5.0 and Premier 3.0 bundle, and have worked to get up to speed. I finished a slide show, and when I went to burn it, I got the "Media not Present" message. I had absolutely no idea what that meant, (another program I have prompts me to insert a blank DVD), and searched many areas on the internet, without any success, so your tutorial was extremely helpful.
I can only guess what a big job it is to produce something as valuable as your tutorial, so I can only repeat, "A great big Thank You".
Looking forward to catching up on your other tutorials.
Thanks again,

Barb,
Often new concerns get lost in long, old threads as inviting as the old, long thread title may look.
So, I would encourage you to start a new thread on your topic if the occasion comes up where you need help, and you see an old, long thread.
The podcast of Corey Barker are very well done and current. That is an excellent starting point for Photoshop Elements video tutorials.Watch them the first time, take notes the second time, and then try to get the same effect with one of your photos.."explore and experiment. BUT, the video tutorial that triggered your question has to do with Premiere Elements and DVD Menus. Are you looking for Photoshop Elements as well as Premiere Elements video tutorials?
Be sure to check out the Learning Center at this web site. If you go to the Home Page of http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com, click on the Learning Center Tab at the top, you can scroll down to free video tutorials for the new versions, Photoshop Elements 6 and Premiere Elements 4.
Were you are subscriber to the PET before it discontinued its subscription service? If so, check out the tutorials in the Subscriber Section there before it closes down, just leaving the forums existing as this web site http://www.elementsvillage.com.
If any additional questions, please start a new thread.

Abby,
Welcome to the Elements Village forum!
When you installed VLC it should have automatically preset the file association so that whenever you double click on a video file to run it, it will automatically bring up VLC as the program running. You can tell if this was done by looking at the video files as they should look like this:
1762
When you double click on a file now, it will automatically start running VLC.
After today I will be unable to help anymore on this for a week as I will be out of town. I will have access to the internet but I will not have my computer with me. Good luck on this problem.

I am waiting for her response as to whether she is trying to view a downloaded file or view the tutorial in her browser. downloading and installing VLC will not help if she is trying to view the tutorial in her browser. Charles is correct, if the tutorial was downloaded and the typical installation process was used then the file should simply open in VLC.

Let me start by thanking everyone for their interest in my problem. I sincerely appreciate it.
ATR-- Yes, I'm trying to look at the video in message #1 of this thread. I'm using Windows XP. Default is in the box you asked about.
My preference would be to watch the video online first and if it's something I want to keep I'd then download it--right now I'm not picky--however I can see it will be fine.
I do show the traffic cone on my video clips now. However, when I click the "Premiere Video Tutorial" button below the video screen picture it opens Quicktime. When I right click on that link and select "Save Link as" the download box appears but says Done almost immediately at the resultant file is only 17.5 kb so something is wrong there--it doesn't play either when I double click the file--VLC opens but then nothing happens.
I hope that answers everyones questions; and thanks again for your help.

The download definitely did not work correctly, unless you can get the tutorial downloaded it will be hard to help with VLC or anything else for that matter. You can try uninstalling Quicktime to see if VLC will become the default player. Without Quicktime however Premiere Elements will not work, so this is kind of a catch 22 situation.

Abby,
OK, I think I am on to something. What is another question.
First, Bayla, you mentioned that it was Jon's suggestion to use VLC for video that resisted playback. Did he ever owe up to making any changes that might have triggered this behavior.
Abby,
First I need to know what Browser you have. Is it Internet Explorer, Firefox, or something else? I have Firefox. This is what I would like you to do:
Go to post #1 of this thread and save that video to your hard drive.
From that hard drive location, right click the download, select Open With, and select/change to Windows Media Player. You should get playback of both audio and video.
If you need details on how to save the video, let me know. That file should be 5.34 MB and, believe it or not, it is shown as .mov file.
Here is the rest of the story.
I have Firefox as my browser.
Windows XP Professional as my operating system.
Windows Media Player 10
QuickTime Version: 7.3.1.70 (the latest)
I CANNOT get audio, only video, from the video tutorial posted in post #1, using QuickTime which is updated to the latest version.
Even if I save it to the hard drive, I cannot get audio, only video, from it with an Open With of QuickTime.
BUT, if I take the download and use Open With Windows Media Player, I have a great playback of video and audio.
It may be as Bayla has suggested, a QuickTime change starting with the previous update, or it could be some incompatibility between PET (that Jon inherited) and QuickTime.
I will try to contact Tami (the voice and creator of that excellent video), and find out if she has any ideas.

Abby,
Another idea. "This is just a test kind."
Go to the home page of this web site http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com and, from the headers across the top, click "Learning Center". Scroll down to the video tutorials for Photoshop Elements 6 and Premiere Elements 4. Pick anyone of them and click on it to see if it plays audio and video then and there (no saving/downloading first). Also, what program opens for the playback? Is it QuickTime or something else?
Let me know how all that turns out.

Thanks, ATR, for persevering.
I'm also using Firefox, Windows XP home, MS Media Player 11 and most current Quicktime.
The test worked fine. I chose Corey's Illustration technique video. It came up in Quicktime. I got both audio and video--it hung up a few times during the first part but played well after that.
I thought I knew how to download the file but...here's what I did (and have done a few times). Clicked on the link in message 1 of this thread, right clicked on the "Premiere Video Tutorial" link under the screen image, and select "Save Link as". The Download box opens and says "Done" almost immediately. When I look at the file it creates--premiere_video2.php--it's 17.5kb. Is there another way to download the file? I even cleared the cache in case that was creating a problem.

Get ready, this is going to be the way I save those videos using Firefox. Follow the instructions, word for word. Do not be distracted by anything else going on at the time in the window.
1. Double click the link in Post #1
2. Start the playback
3. While it is playing, go to Tools/Page Info/Media Tab, and scroll to the bottom of the list of files. You will not see the video there yet.
4.Go over to History at the top of Firefox Interface
5. Click on the file at the top of the list. It should say "Photoshop Elements Techniques-Video Tip"
6.Go back to Tools/Page Info/Media Tab. At the bottom of the list of files, you should see "http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/videofiles/dvdtut.mov" followed by Type: Embed. Make sure you see Embed.
7. Save As.
That is it.
That should work. I just did it again to check the path out.

Well, thanks again, ATR; no luck though. The "Photoshop Elements Techniques-Video Tip" showed up at the bottom of the list but when I went back to the Tools media tab the dvdtut.mov file wasn't in the list.
When you look at the General tab in the tools area when the video is running does it show the size of the file as 17.5kb? That's what mine shows but that can't be right.
ATR
December 21st, 2007, 10:49 PM
Abby,
That .mov file should be about 5.34 MB. I got that figure from properties of the file that I downloaded and could playback audio & video in Windows Media Player 10.
Maybe give that Firefox download route another try. When you are in History and you click on the correct link there, a Quicktime logo will flash on the screen. That is when you head over to Tools/Page Info/Media Tab and look for the file with Type: Embed.
It is tricky, but does work.
I tried taking my download into Premiere Elements as well as Windows Movie Maker to explore its makeup. Windows Movie Maker did not accept the file. Premiere Elements accepted it, video was OK,
Good luck.

I forgot to end the last sentence...in Premiere Elements, video was OK. The audio clip could be seen on the Timeline, but no sound (there were no waves in the clip).

Well, shock of shocks. I got it! Thank you, ATR! When I expanded the URL box today and saw the address of the tutorial there, I clicked on it. It opened in full screen view so I tried your suggested steps--Tool box to Media tab, page info and sure enough the embedded file was there. I was able to download and view with sound. I'm guessing the problem I had yesterday was that it wasn't in full screen mode so I was getting the page info for the thread page that was open behind the video window--does that sound reasonable?
Anyway, I'm happy and will hang on to your tips on making videos run without Quicktime.

Abby,
I am so proud of you. Do you think that the VLC Player download had anything to do with your ultimate success? I did not download the VLC player, and I cannot get audio on that video tutorial posted in post #1. BUT, everything else but that is OK. So, I am not going to bother about it. I have seen that video and learned from it.
Congratulations. Good work.

Yes, ATR, VLC is now my default program for video files. The tutorial opened in that after I downloaded it. I just tried opening the tutorial in Quicktime and it opens but there's still no sound. So VLC made it possible for me to see the video and hear it.
Thanks again for your perseverance!

Amazing.
All of a sudden I can hear the audio of that old Premiere Elements video tutorial that starts off this thread. My history on this matter is no doubt recorded somewhere in this thread.
What happened? Not sure, BUT....
Last night, I was prompted to download the latest version of QuickTime (V7.4) and iTunes, and I did. So, maybe Bayla was right on with her diagnosis ( Maybe Apple was motivated to fix the QuickTime bugs ????????? (However, I am not ruling out alternative explanations yet.)
When the problems were hot and heavy, an alternative player was suggested which seemed to supply a remedy for many. Maybe no need now..or until they update QuickTime again?
