Cropping Question

When trying to crop a photo from a 30D file size of 9.733Wx14.6H to 8x10 for printing I get a print with empty space of white on top and bottom. I first crop and then open image size and change width to 9.733 and it changes height from 10 to 12.166. Then I open canvas size to change height to 14.6 causing this empty space. What am I doning wrong? Thanks, Roland

8x10 doesn't fit ratio wise - I have learned to shoot with a little more space on the sides and then use the crop tool set to 8X10 and get my picture that way. You can get some very decent 5x7s though.
