I am new to PSE5. I am new to PSE for that matter. My question is this. The other day I looked at the video tutorial titled Border Breakout posted august 25, 2005. I followed along with a picture of my own and I had no problems.
Later that evening I tried to do it to another picture and I ran into some problems. For some reason at the point in the video where you are instructed to duplicate your background and just the portion that you selected to be the picture is suppossed to show up it doesn't work. Instead of getting just the selected portion in my duplicated background layer I get the entire background.
Can someone please help me out?

Thanks,
Devin

Hi Devin-

Welcome!

After you make your selection, try pressing ctrl+J (Mac: Command+J). This will duplicate the selected portion. If you are right-clicking on the Layer thumbnail on the layers palette and choosing Duplicate it'll duplicate the entire layer, regardless of what's selected. ctrl/command+J will duplicate just what's selected.

BTW, this keyboard shortcut is the same as going to Layer>New>Layer via Copy.

Does that help?

See this thread:

Make sure you are doing Ctrl-J to duplicate your selection. Any other method will result in you duplicating the whole background & not just the selection.

Hi Devin ..

so glad that you have managed to do it OK ... why not put the image into your Gallery so that we can see it :)

How do I put the image in my gallery. It is really a rough image and I am still trying to work on getting much better. I am doing all of this with a laptop and one of the built in mouse pads.

My creative juices are still only trickling, not flowing well.
