Check you don't have the Caps Lock On. You can also control the cursor in Edit > Preferences > Display and Cursors.

I've had that happen with the cap's on and when the size of the brush is very small. Good luck.

Thanks for your suggestions. I went back tried again & still get the crosshair.
My caps lock is not on . I went into Preferences& it shows
Painting Cursors-normal brush tip is checked & it shows a circle.
Other Cursors-Standard is checked. I am using the Erazor.
I could swear that I was using the erazor a while back & I had decent tip on
it.
Any other ideas?

have your tried resetting your tool?

Vesta Reset tool is grayed out but I can Reset all Tools which I have just done again & makes no difference.
I am trying to use the Erazer what do you get for a Brush with this Tool.?
These Tools drive me nuts sometimes. I have a Trackball vertical is O.K but doing Horizontal I find very difficult.
Thanks Storm

Can it be that your brush is really tiny. try hitting the ] (right bracket key)to make it bigger which works on all brushes. The other things should have worked so this is the only thing I can think of.

It seems that the suggestions that have made are usually the answer to this problem but by any chance could you have the background eraser tool checked instead of the regular one? Just another thought.

I had the same problem. The cross hair will show up if the brush size is very small. Took me a few times to realize that. Pressing the ] (right bracket) a few time changes it from a cross hair to a circle. The same thing will happen if you zoom in close. (It will change to a circle)

Than you so much-Colin, Vesta,Patty & Steve.
I guess 13px is too small as soon as I went to 19px I got a lovely little square. All these little things this has gone into my recipe box.
There is a thread somewhere I think the person was having trouble because his erazer was a circle & would not fit exactly into the corners. Mine is square. :)
Thanks Storm

If your eraser is a square that is because you've selected a square brush there are lots of shapes of brushes you can choose from.

The regular eraser is the one on the left and if you hover your mouse over it you'll see where it says eraser. The box with the squiggle in it shows your brush and the triangle facing down is the place you can click to change your brush. Try this and you'll see all the different ones.

This works the same in the selection brush, brush, clone stamp, & healing brush too.

Sorry if I'm being too elementary but it took me forever to figure that out when I was just learning.

Thanks Patty. I knew there were different Brushes but never really connected it all . I still have not . :) Every little bit of knowledge helps, but its very difficult remembering it all :D

I have tried the cap lock; my tip changed from a picture of a square eraser to a cross hair with a dot in the center. I also changed the pixel to as large as it goes (2500). Still no circle. The brush tip is still the cross hair.
I have tried resetting the brushes, but it still does not make the brush tip to become a circle.
Please help, Thanks LaDonna

LaDonna,

Try going to Edit>Preferences>Display & Cursors. Make sure your brush is set to normal Brush Tip. This will give you a circle to paint with (or a crosshair if you have Caps Lock on) If you are seeing a picture of a square eraser it is because you have the option 'Standard' selected.
