Scanning Photos

When scanning photos, what is the best resolution to scan at that will allow the best editing results? I have a variety of older photos...some black & white and also some old polaroids from the 70's. Thanks!

WOW, thanks for the site with the calculater. I use the scantips site today, to scan some old photos of my children in the 70's and 80's. Lots of wonderful info
