View Full Version : How do I make the heart shape scrapbook charms?

I don’t see a heart outline in the custom shapes in Photoshop Elements 5. I have not been able to use the Search in Adobe Exchange ever since Adobe changed its website last year.
Using the custom shape, do I simplify the shape layer to make it transparent?
Step 11-12-13: After the photo is copied and moved inside the charm, is there an easy way to draw the custom shape the same size of the charm? After the custom shape is drawn, do I simplify this layer and follow Step 13 to remove the excess photo? OR, is there another way I could add a photo or background inside the charm without drawing the shape the same size of the charm?
I enjoyed doing the tutoria using the Elliptical Marquee in Making Scrapbook Charms.

Hi Grace,
There is a heart shape under the set called "Shapes." You can also download a file with a bunch of heart shapes HERE (http://www.modempool.com/dday/dianas_webpage_000002.htm).
Enjoy!:)

Hi Grace ...
If you want to use a custom shape:
Do your custom shape
then go to the layers palette
... control click on the shape layer thumbnail to regain the selection.
Creat a new layer above the shape layer (switch of the shape layer eyeball)
then stroke the selection.
To remove the excess ...
Control>Click on the shape layer thumbnail in the layers palette
then click on the photos layer
Select>Inverse ... and then Edit>Delete
Hope this helps :)

Diana, thank you so much for your lovely heart shapes. It is very generous of your to share your shapes with forum members. You're right--there is a solid heart shape and an outlined heart shape in "Shapes". I can't believe I didn't see the outlined heart shape before when I was looking for it. Thanks again for your help.

Wendy, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. When I remove the excess, the photo background is deleted. I tried with the solid heart shape and the outlined heart shape and I get the same results.
I hate to ask you to do this. Will you post a screenshot of your layers palette of the gradient filled heart shape?

Hi Grace ....
I will have to recreate it ...
... but in the meantime how do you mean the photobackground is deleted ?? ... do you mean the area inside the heart instead of ourside the heart ??
If so just undo it then do Select>Inverse before you do Edit>Delete :)

I think the problem is that the outline of the heart custom shape is not a solid line. The entire photo layer is deleted.

Hi Grace ...
You need to Control Click on your Custom Shape Layer thumbnail not the Stroke Layer thumbnail ...
Do let me know if that sorts it out :)

I know it's important to be on the right layer. I was on the wrong layer. :o
Here's my heart charm:

Thanks again Wendy for helping me. This will be fun filling the heart charm shape with different backgrounds.
