Hi Sassie,
First you need to get the Flowerpatch image from the Subscribers' section at:
http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/subscriber/download/extras_v4n1/flowerpatch.jpg
This is mentioned in the italics paragraph at the end of the first paragraph in the article.
When the Flowerpatch image is fully loaded on your screen, right click on it and choose Save Picture As, choose Desktop and then click Save....this will save it to your desktop.
Now, from Elements, File > Open....click Desktop and look for Flowerpatach.jpg, and double click on it to load it into Elements.
Then starting with "Duplicate the Photo Layers...Step One" in the magazine, use the Flowerpatch image.
From your description, I can't figure out what you may be doing to make the Cookie Cutter shape disappear. One thing is to make sure you are using the Cookie Cutter tool and not the regular Custom Shape tool....sometimes people get the two tools confused because they both use the same shapes. Also, if you haven't been using the Flowerpatch image, you may have been trying to cut your shapes from your main image, which won't work.
For now, get the Flowerpatch image and start again from Step One, following the instructions exactly and it should work. If not, let us know what's happening and we'll see if we can help further.
