View Full Version : Mac, iPhoto, PSE4 sizing question

Just when I think I get a grip on sizing I keep getting curve balls lobbed at me! I have a photo that I edited in PSE4, sized to print at 4X6 (300ppi) and saved as a PSD in iPhoto. I tried to print it from Elements and it was cropped. I found directions for printing from iPhoto and tried that, but it was still cropped. (I'm using an HP Photosmart 7960.) When I set it to print with a border the border is wider on one side than the other three, so the photo is not in the proper ratio. When I looked at the photo details in iPhoto it says the image size is 1777 X 1184 pixels. When I open it in PSE4 it says its 1800 X 1200, as it should be. Why the difference?

I think I'm going to just give up on printing 4 X 6. I was following a couple of other threads about this problem, but none of the suggestions works. I've tried using the crop tool instead of Image>Resize. I tried opening a new blank file at 4 X 6 and dragging my photo onto it. I've scoured the HP site for a solution...that's where I got the instructions for cropping/printing from iPhoto. Any other suggestions...other than throwing my printer out the window?

I'dthrow the printer out the window. I'm under the impression that HP's don't play well with macs. Both epson and canon have very good printers that do play well with macs. Another option would be to buy a small photo trimmer at a craft store(<$10), print with a border and trim so all sides equal.

Hi Linda,

I wish I could justify a new printer, but this one works really well MOST of the time. I've given up on the 4X6 borderless issue. I have one of those nifty photo trimmers which is really nice, but I get irritated at the fact that I need to use it when I've spent thousands of dollars on computer, software, scanners, photo printer, paper, ink, books, training, etc. so that I can make my own prints!

In re-reading my original post here I realized that I never got a reply from anyone about the size difference issue between Elements and iPhoto. If a pixel is a pixel, then why does a photo show a size of 1200 X 1800 px in PSE4 and 1184 X 1777 in iPhoto? Anybody have any insight?

Ok, to make things clear, you edited in PSE, then saved in PSD. Now the PSD file has been imported in iPhoto. Right ?

I tried to print it from Elements and it was cropped. I found directions for printing from iPhoto and tried that, but it was still cropped. (I'm using an HP Photosmart 7960.) When I set it to print with a border the border is wider on one side than the other three, so the photo is not in the proper ratio.

Are you using the tear-off paper? If not, you need to tell iPhoto which kind of paper you use. Also, you need to make sure iPhoto (and PSE) know about the page setup (File / Page Setup), paper size and orientation.

BTW, HP are famous for being unable to print at the exact centre, unfortunately.

When I looked at the photo details in iPhoto it says the image size is 1777 X 1184 pixels. When I open it in PSE4 it says its 1800 X 1200, as it should be. Why the difference?

I believe iPhoto and PSE aren't looking at the same picture. I just did the test, saved a JPEG as a PSD, imported in iPhoto, get info on the picture in iPhoto and it's still the same. Does it do that with all the pictures or only one ? Have you tried dragging this picture out of iPhoto and opening it with Preview ? Does it still says the same different size ?

Hi Ray,

If I remember correctly I had Elements open and imported the photo from my scanner. I edited it, saved it as a PSD on the desktop, and then put it into iPhoto. When I decided to print it I dragged it from iPhoto onto the PSE icon in the dock and it opened in PSE. In iPhoto it's size showed as 1184 X 1777 and in PSE it showed as 1200 X 1800.

I've concluded, with the help of others on the forum, that the 4X6 printing issue is a problem with the HP printer. Later this evening when I have more time I'll run through the PSE/iPhoto issue again to see if there are other photos that are different. I'll get back to you later...

I am absolutely not an expert at all things HP. I trashed my last HP a few months after I got my Mac. It died about a week after the warranty period expired. That was the second one dying almost in the same conditions at the same time. So that was it for me, I returned to Canon then, switched to Epson after that, but returning to Canon in a few months :D

Hi Janet,
I'm not familiar with the HP except to know that my local printer service centre dislikes having to deal with HP.
On the Canon's I've used there is a slider control for overlapping full page borderless prints.
I've experimented with mine to find how accurate they are and its only .5 mm off centre when fine tuned.
This problem may also be related to alignment guides on your infeed tray.
A test you could try is making a numbered, gridlined 6x4 and printing it out to verify where the alignment is. If really off centred then it may have to be addressed by service.
Regards,
Rick.
