Well I am getting there, giving some real serious thought to purchasing that D80 Nikon. Was wondering about what lens some of you have purchased to start out with. I am thinking about getting the camera with the 18-55mm lens and then also purchasing the 55-200mm lens right now. Any comments would be appreciated. Have any of you had any problems with blurring from camera shake? Thanks.

This a forum for D40/50/70/80 users. You will find a wealth of info there.
I think the general suggestion is to get the best lenses you can afford. Do not put cheap glass on a good camera.

Rachel... I have a D80 with a 18-200mm lens. I also have the 50mm. Love them both. :D

I found this to be a very useful site.

I have the 18-135 and kick myself for not having bought teh 18-200 like kimi. The graet advantage of the 18-200, other than zoom range, is that it has image stabilisation. Another factor in helping you to shoot in low light. the combination of image stabilisation and Automatic ISO adjustment makes this a great combination for general and especially for low light shooting.

R,

I have the D70 (6mp) and purchased with 2 lenses-the 50 mm 1.8 (at $100 a steal) and the 24-120 vr. Love them both. I bite the bullet and bought the 18-200 vr because I wanted the stretch and reach and all I can say is WOW. Sharper than the 24-120 and the 50 and focuses instantly. Although not a true macro lens you can get to about a foot from your subject and still be in focus. I don't think it will come off my camera. I'll be unloading the others.

The fewer times you switch lenses w a digital the better (dust factor). You may want to pick up a Giotto Rocket which is cheap ($15-20) and works great at blasting dust off filters and sensors. Good luck-I know you will love the Nikon DSLR.

Just to be different (and there are so many combinations depending on what you want to do) I went with the 18-70 (reputably a slightly better lens than the 18-55) and the 70-300 VR and, of course the 50mm 1.8. My reasoning was that I wanted a longer telephoto and didn't really need VR at the shorter focal lengths.

But you can't go too far wrong with any of the Nikkor lenses and a lot depends on what kind of pictures you want to take (and your budget :) ). And there's always another lens out there that you'll want once you get hooked.

If you are thinking of a lens somewhere in the 200mm region you should definitely consider one with image stabilization. Even the slightest camera shake will be magnified on a long lens. The Zoom lenses in the 200mm category that you are considering do not have large apertures and you will find yourself in trouble trying to get a fast enough shutter speed in medium to low light. Image stabilization will allow you to shoot at a slower speed without getting blurred photos. Remember though, Image stabilization only affects camera movement. It will have no effect on subject movement.

I have a D70s and love it. Have the 28-70 that came with the camera and then purchased the 70-300. Think you'll be happy with whatever you get until you see something else to save your money for. If you look in my gallery most of the bird photos were taken with the 70-300. I had the camera on a tripod because of camera shake and mostly my shake. I can not hand hold for that long and get something in focus. OLD AGE!! Want to start some macro photography once the weather warms up a bit here in the east.

Have a great day everyone
