Kimi: That looks like still life to me :) . Great shot. I walked around my yard today too and it really is still - it's still frozen solid - so I'm still thinking of my still life pic :D

Tony, very nice pebbles. You get those for free? Down here I have to buy them at the store.

Nancy, we already know your image is picture perfect.:D Congrats!!

Byron, Love It, Love It!! Gives a whole new meaning to the song. Eli's coming...
Congrats on your image being picked also.

Tony & Byron.. don't you find your camera give you fantastic color? I am amazed by the colors I get with my pictures. At least since Tony told me how to put my setting back to normal. :o

Yup Kimi: All pebbles are free up here. Actually they're not even native - they came down with the glaciers from way up north during the last ice age. If you ever need a truck load let me know :D . Actually the color in this case was more from soaking them in water rather than the camera although I agree - the D80 does give good color and pretty close to the real thing. I shot that one RAW because I wasn't sure of the white balance with the desk lamps I was using - as it turned out I really didn't need to make much adjustment.

That shot is wonderful! The color variations in there are just beautiful and with the bonus of the fossil and snail shell. That would make a great background image in a collage as well.

Thanks Kimi! :)

I really liked the pears pic. Are they real? or just perfectly ripe?

The BBQ with toilet paper crack me up, but where's the beer?

A nice touch with the bunny, and peaches, did you know that on the right of your balls image that there is a nice starlight flare?

The other balls image has a nice touch of black soft edging. With my kids around, balls in bowls would not last long. Bought 400 balls for the kids sandbox outside to form a ball pit. What a mistake....getting my exercise.

The rangers are cute especially the comment. Thought the same thing.

and the pebbles, nice coloring with a subtle hint of simmer

Like me, I took pics of what was on my desk. Nice touch with the red, white and blue and Ronald of course.

Nancy, congrats on your image....such a touch of beauty..

And Kimi-Boo, have you thought of doing a sequence of shots to capture that rosebud while its blooming...like a day to day sequence? Just a thought. I like the lighting and blurred background..

Thanks Deedee - I thought Bill was bringing the Beer!!

Very pretty Kimi - I like the suggestion that you follow the blooming stages with photos; imagine the beautiful collage you could do with them!

Nancy, I love what you did with the lighting on your rose bud; I'm finding lighting quite challenging and admire your skill in this image. How did you accomplish the black background for this one?

Always something different from you Byron, great idea! The textured background works really well with them I though.

Very nice Es, the contrasting colour is great!

Tony, you did a super job of bringing out the natural colours of these pebbles; very handsome pebbles they are and a well taken shot as usual!

Like your interesting subject Denise - how did you light only that area of the mircroscope? Great effect.

Suzi - great patterns and colour to your subjects, always love the close-ups. Love the bunny on the bench, the relaxed pose is perfect!

Oh Ellen, I'd love those ceramic balls! How big are they? Again the patterns and colour make for a great image. Like the combination of the soft round shapes of the balls and bowl with the lines of the shelf it sits on.

Like the angle and close-up perspective of your barbecue items, Bill. The simple "realness" is always appealing.

Boy Steven, you must have some music collection, you can find something for every theme! Very clever. The background is really neat - how did you do accomplish that?

Carol, I love your pears image - the composition and colour is wonderful! Were you also in charge of your lighting or did that happen naturally? I really like the effects of the light and shadows inside the bowl. Very nice!

.... but where's the beer?

Doesn't that always seem to be the question?

Thanks for the nice comments Denise and Pat. I agree ... we have a lot of nice entries this week.

Hi Pat,
Thanks! The lighting was done using a pot light in my bookcase. I just kept moving the microscope until I liked what I saw. However, the journal cover was glossy, so there was a lot of glare. I'm still working on the final version that will eventually be printed as a giclee 16x24 for my husband's office at work. He was just recently promoted VP of R&D at his biotech firm and thought this would be fitting. Next step is to polish up images of cells at the intra/intercellular level and make them into giclees (12x12 ro 25x25) for his firm as well for display. We will see. extra time is rare these days....
PS. my avatar is a picture of a dividing cell.

Ross,

Go back to the image on Pixentral and copy/paste the "code" in the bottom box that says forum. It looks like you used the one in the HTML box.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the nice words, Pat-they are appreciated:)

That was all natural light, I have a very large window in my kitchen that faces west and we get some great light in the winter in the afternoon.

Thank you Pat. I'm just starting to experiment with lighting myself. On this I set up a crude home studio. I opened my laptop and draped the upright screen with black felt. Then I raised it with books until it was high enough for the rose in the vase to be centered. I used my tripod and took the shots with the timer so I could hold a sheet of white glossy photo paper to reflect the light. I used a layer mask to mask off the rose, and then did a strong levels adjustment on the inverse (being the background) until I got a nice dark black because the felt actually stood out a bit from the reflected light. To rid the fibers on the felt I did a little gaussian blur to smooth it out. Quick, simple and very effective results.:)

I had some dried flowers I was going to use as the centerpiece..but decided it was too risky.:D
I almost forgot today... son came home last night for a night, and we loaded a linux distro on a spare laptop. What a steep learning curve this is going to be.
