Sunrise at the Volcano

The Haleakalah Volcano in Maui is a very popular tourist stop. Many people ride back down on bikes after they experience the start of a new day. This is one of the most beautiful sights I have ever witnessed, but the frigid temperature made you wonder what you were doing out of bed at 5:00 AM.

We were too lazy to try to make it for sunrise, but we were bound and determined to drive to the top, as long as we were on Maui! So what if it was the middle of the day!! :D

The clouds were so dense that we didn't know we had reached the top until we hit the end of the road!! We were barely able to figure out where to go to park.

We decided to stretch our legs in the visitor center, and look at the displays inside. After being in there for five minutes or so, the clouds suddenly parted and the crater was perfectly visible for about a half minute.

I was so surprised at the immensity of it! And the color!! ...and then it was gone.

Even as brief a glimpse as we were given, we felt rewarded for making the trip to the top. Somewhere, I have the prints from my 35mm P&S that I quickly snapped through the glass of the overlook. (this was in prehistoric, pre-digital times) They're pretty crappy, so I prefer to "see" it the way I remember it... ;)

YOUR image makes me consider going back and trying to not be so lazy!!! :p

Gorgeous shot. My son's next duty station after he gets home from Iraq is supposed to be Hawaii. Now we will have NO excuse for not going!!!!
