I've spent 5 hrs. taking the tutorials and tried importing some video clips (.AVI files) and only the audio is working. The screen otherwise is gray. According to Adobe support, I've tried rendering the video which it loads about halfway and then freezes. The video plays fine under Windows Media Player and Nero but I'm having no luck once I get it into Premiere Elements 3.0.
Can anyone help me? Thanks!

Here is the first line of attack on the problem:

On the Premiere Elements side of the issue, I am not sure what tutorials you have watched and/or trying to replicate. I would suggest that you especially check out the ones in the Learning Center (this web site) and those under the Tutorials Tab at http://www.chuckengels.com.
It is not clear if Photoshop Elements transfers to Premiere Elements are involved in this issue. If they are, check out Help for details of output slideshow and the like. That will be the second line of attack if necessary.
It will all fall into place. Don't give up.

You may need to give us more information about these video clips because there are actually multiple different formats that can be in a .avi file -
If it is a DV-AVI file from a digital video camcorder then it would probably not have this problem. However, if it is a video clip from a digital still camera (especially a Canon) it could be a Motion JPEG format in that .avi file.
Now some people have these Motion JPEG files play OK in Premiere Elements and some do not. Seems like your PC may be in the "not" - for Motion JPEG files, see the following threads at the Adobe forum for 2 different possible solutions
http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc247e2
http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc2c6be/3
and specifically read post number 4
If your video clip files are not Motion JPEG, then the problem may still be that your PC does not have a codec to play these files. There fore, do tell us what you know about the format within these .avi files and how you obtained them.
