View Full Version : ISO Information

I'm another new user to PSE5. I have noticed that the ISO information is not listed in the metadata info box for any of my JPEG shots. While it does appear for my RAW shots. I read the previous thread about RAW vs JPEG, and have recently decided that for most of my shots, I would use JPEG. Because I am still learning the camera, as well as PSE5, having all the information available about a particular shot is important.

Is there a way to turn on this information in PSE5?

I have confirmed that the ISO information is shown when reviewed from the camera.

Any feedback is appreciated.

This is an "Undocumented Feature" in PSE. ISO isn't displayed for many JPEG files, probably because EXIF isn't implemented the same for all cameras. The best workaround is to use something like iEXIF (http://www.opanda.com/en/iexif/index.html), a free plug-in for Windows Explorer, Windows IE and Firefox. It lets you right-click on any image and display the EXIF data.

I had this same question using Elements 5, and found the following information in Scott Kelby's "the photoshop elements 5 book":

Page 35 - Scott writes:
"To view a photo's EXIF data, first click on the photo in the Photo
Browser, and then click the Show or Hide Properties button at
the bottom-left side of the Photo Browser window to show the
Properties palette. When the Properties palette appears in the
bottom-right corner of the Organize Bin, click the Metadata button
at the top of the palette (it's the fourth button from the left).
This shows an abbreviated version of the photo's EXIF data
(basically, the make, model, ISO, exposure, f-stop, focal length
of the lens, and the status of the flash). Of course, the camera
embeds much more info than this. To see the full EXIF data,
under the View section at the bottom of the palette, just select
Complete and you'll get more infomation on this file than you'd
probably ever want to know. One thing that isn't displayed in
the Brief view that you probably might want to know is the date
and time the photo was taken, and to see that you will have to
open the Complete view."

Oops! I guess those of us who don't use the Organizer are "up-the-creek"! :D Does he tell a way to access the complete EXIF data in PSE5 Editor?

Is "Photo Browser" a standard term? The original "File Browser" in PSE3 was much more useful for me since I maintain my own filing system.

There are very limited EXIF data in Editor in >File >File Info. Depending on the camera, the ISO value may or may not be shown. iExif or IrfanView are definitely better options, although I have come across files from cameras that show an Exposure Index instead of the ISO value.

Thanks for the replies. I downloaded iEXIF and confirmed the ISO information is listed in the metadata. I also opened the images in Adobe Lightroom b4 and confirmed is shows it there as well. The metadata listed in the Editor also ignores the ISO information. There is a lot of information, just not ISO. I suspect that for JPEG images, PSE5 strips the ISO data on import.

To me this is just basic information that should always be listed. Why Adobe overlooked such an important piece of data is beyond me. I think I'll send them an email. I'll update the thread if I get any feedback.

Thanks,
Dale

I have no problem seeing ISO in the metadata with Elements (both via the Editor and the Organizer) however I do recall that some cameras (Canon?) don't implement ISO data according to the EXIF standard and that's why you can't see it. I'll see if I can remember where I saw this.

Tony,

I was just thinking the same as you. Many of the Canon Point and Shoot cameras place the ISO values in a non-standard field. This has been discussed on the Canon forum at dpreview.com

Using the PSE5 Organizer, Properties, Complete Metadata,
I looked at photos from a Canon G5, a Canon A620 which did not show the ISO. However a photo from a Panasonic FZ5 did show the ISO value.

For the Canon A620, my expereince is that the ISO value is not displayed by PS Elements whether it was explicitly set or whether ISO was set to auto.

Barb, I'll confirm that photos from my Canon S3 IS won't show ISO in PSE, although IrfanView doesn't have any trouble listing it. I think this goes back a few generations of PSE....I recall a similar issue with my G2.

Just for clarification, I have a Nikon D50.

When I view the EXIF information in IrFranView, the ISO data appears in the "Maker Note (Vendor):" section. It does not appear in the "File" section. But then again, I noticed some other elements in the "Maker Note" sections do appear in PSE.

Again, this is only an issue with JPEG images, not RAW. PSE is treating the metadata differently. It makes no sense to me why they would do this. I'm sure they have a reason, but I can't think of one.

Dale - that's curious - I have a D80 and ISO appears in both the "File" and "Maker Notes" section in Irfanview and does show up in Elements. Sounds like Canon and Nikon both have different implementations of EXIF data for different cameras. Makes you wonder why they can't be consistent.
