Just starting out, some problems

Hey, sorry to bug any of you

But, I just got into elements recently and am eager to edit some photos that I have taken

I loaded my images onto elements but none of the tools seem to have an effect on the image

I'm sure it's something stupid that I haven't done or something, but some help would be appreciated

No bother.... everybody here likes to help.

For another try .. just open a blank document File>new>blank
fill it with a colour and try a few tools on that. One thing that is a common problem is that you could be using the selection brush instead of the regular brush (they both look similar in the toolbar) and I think everybody has done that at least once in a while.

When you open your photo, if you look in the palette bin on the left side you should see a thumbnail of your photo. It will say background and show a tiny lock. You can do nothing to a background. Just double click on the thumbnail and click OK in the box that opens. The layer should read something like layer 1 and the lock should have vanished. you can now do whatever you wish with your photo.

I created a new blank and filled it in, but the brush still doesnt work
some tools work like fill and drawing shapes and text, but other tools such ass dodge and burn or spot healing don't do anything\

(edit) I did make the lock disappear but the image still wont change when I use tools on it.

I figured out my problem


The problem was that my computer (since a tablet is installed) wouldn't let me use my mouse for anything and only let my tablet edit the image
